people have been criticizing mj, kirsten duntz's portrayal and the romance and as i've kept watching i still have no idea what's going on? the way i see sam raimi reinterpret Mary Jane as a normal everyday girl who has some problems in her life because that's more relatable and thought that people wouldn't but that somneone like peter would go out with a spitfire like mary jane. mary jane in the movie has a troubled homelife, has trouble with her future, has struggle with her reltaionship with harry and peter, and is an emotional wreck in her terrible life like most people do. she also felt betrayed at peter when he skipped out on everything concerning her and was the only one who had been there for her. she became jealous of peter getting all the love and attention while she gets fired from acting in the 3rd movie. she doesn't seem that much of a horrible person and kirsten did an amazing performance so what's the deal?

Mary Jane is a bit of a wet lettuce in Raimis Spoder-Man for me, plus Dunst is nowhere near hot enough for the role.

Dunst was a mis-cast. But the romance was written way better than it was in the ASM movies.

Veeeeeeeeeeeeeeerrrrryyyyyyyy debatable statement.

Won't though, cause Raimi vs Webb thing.

I thought dunst did a great job with her role. I don't see how anyone even for the people who always supported the raimi films hate dunst. Of it was Bryce Dallas Howard then id understand

Kirsten just got some of the treatment Shailene Woodley did from silly fans accusing her of not being hot enough to be MJ.

You gotta be ****ing kidding me....

No way.

The romance is dull as MoS one.

It's just a forced drama combined with bad writing.

Well, in Spider-Man 2 the on-again, off-again nature was excruciatingly bad. Everytime one was ready to commit, the other told the first one off, and it ping-ponged through the whole story. Lame

Well MJ is emotionally destraught due to her stupid family is upset that Peter, the person who has always been there for her, never keeps showing up to her play and is marrying the bland version of John jameson while stl having feeling towards Peter. I think that's how people behave in real life. I don't know, maybe Kirsten is just too emotional or that MJ doesn't feel like MJ. I know changes happen in the media but it feels like either Gwen Stacey or Debra Whitman just dyed their hair color.

MJ can get really emotional in the comics. She's walked out on Peter, left him, gone into depression, seeked out psychiatrists and all sorts.

MJ had good reason to not trust Peter because he kept letting her down. She couldn't wait forever for someone who rejected her. She settled for John Jameson, even though her heart was still with Peter. But MJ has done that in the comics too where she dated guys she didn't really want. It's because of her family issues like Spider-Knight said.

It was like the entire arc of Ross and Rachel from Friends reduced to a sub-plot in a 2 hour movie. Its pretty sloppy, and the Ross and Rachel story was sloppy to begin with.

It wasn't like that because Ross and Rachel kept getting together and breaking up. Peter and MJ got together once, and never broke up.

And every 20 minutes one of them with check with the other "ready yet?" It was annoying.

You're exaggerating. MJ checked once to see if Peter was ready, and that was in the cafe, and Peter checked once to see if she was ready and that was after he quit being Spider-Man and went to see her play.

Of course I'm exaggerating. C'mon man, every 20 minutes? It was still an annoying back and forth in a chemistry-less romance.

There was at least one other. The moment when she announced her engagement and Peter was like "What about me" and she said "I can't wait forever."

No she didn't say that in that scene. She was upset with him because he missed her play again, when everyone else from Aunt May to her no good father could come see it but her so called best friend couldn't.

They had great chemistry and it was a very believable relationship.

I don't have the script in front of me, but I distinctly remember it being implied Peter wanted to get together and she said no. and then the poetry bit. "I've been reading poetry." "don't start"

MJ said "What ever that means" when he said he'd been reading poetry. It was not a discussion about getting back together.

No they didnt

Yes they did. One of the best of any comic book movie for sure.

Are you still talking about the ASM movies? I agree with you.

hmmm... I agree that Raimi's MJ tends to get more flack than she deserves.

I do like that Raimi showed MJ chasing after her own dreams throughout the trilogy. Raimi's MJ was an ambitious character and had her own struggles separate from her relationship with Peter. MJ overcoming her abusive upbringing is probably something that could've been explored throughout the course of the trilogy. It was practically dropped entirely after a couple of scenes in the first film.

Personally, I found her to be a bit too emotionally needy (ala 616 Betty Brant) for Peter. I never really understood why those two fell in love with each other in the first place (other than "this is the girl that Peter Parker has always loved", which is obviously a complete departure from the comics). I felt like we hardly got to see those everyday moments of Peter and MJ just being Peter and MJ with eachother without all of the relationship angst and "will they/won't they" drama looming over them.

Ultimately, Raimi's version lacked the spunk, vivacity, and fiery charisma of the character in the comics. The MJ personality alone brings a lot to the mythos. It's probably one of the reasons why the character has managed to endure for so long while other supporting characters have come and gone. Raimi's MJ was watered down by comparison, and never really had that type of presence.

And I'm sure everyone agrees that the whole "damsel in distress" thing was completely overdone in the Raimi trilogy; especially considering that it's adapting a female comic book character who has, on many instances, subverted the "damsel in distress" trope. Not saying that MJ needs to go help Spidey defeat his villains and save a bunch of planes from crashing to prove that she is a "strong" and "independent" female character, but moving forward they should really just consider leaving the girlfriend/ love interest out of the hero's battles entirely and find a more clever way of raising the stakes.

MJ from the Raimi was sexist as hell,Kirsten wasn't even playing the MJ everyone knows, even the hair was different but it isn't something that would make the character bad,she served no porpuse on the trilogy besides getting captured, screaming and cheating on Peter.

Totally MJ :whatever:

I think you misunderstood me, Andrew. I was talking about the TASM romance there.
