- A special art pencil?
- No. 2 pencil?

I am stuck with no. 2 pencil. :(

Any suggestions?

I don't know... Here (France) the references are HB for normal pencil ,2H and + for stronger mines, 2B and + for softer mines (easier to darken stuff with those).

I heard that 2H was what the pros use (or should use) to pencil but I believe it's impossible, the thing is too damn hard to make lines visible (I name them immortal pencils) ! :o

It may not answer your question but if you intend to make a drawing that looks arty, use a sharp color pencil, green or brown-red, and it'll look like art no matter how bad the drawing ! ;)

So hum, to be more complete, I use HB criterium mines (+ no need to sharpen the pencil ; - lines can't be thick) and try not too press too hard on the pencil (makes erasing and inking all the easier).
I used to try blue criterium mines (so it won't print on photocopies) for the rough sketches but I don't do that anymore, it's a bit distracting on the original page.

I like mechanical ones so I don't have to keep sharpening. To get technical probably an HB or 2B is best for skecthing.

I like using a nonphoto blue pencil to start, then finishing off with woodless 8B Pencils.

THE ONE THAT FITS YOUR HAND

no one can tell you wich is the best pencil to draw, some people like hard leads, other soft....

the only thing the softer the lead, your work can get very messy

I personally use a 0.5 mm mechanical pencil usually with 2B leads....
or some times regular 3h artist pencil that I sharp with a knife

I have been trying to get that kind of pencil but I can´t find it around here, can you point me in the rigth direction

It exists as 0.5 mechanical pencil mines. It shouldn't be too difficult to find. :)

I hunt and scour for them in art shops. Not ones like Michaels, but the hardcore fancy shops like Daniel Smith or Aaron Bros. They'll either be labeled "nonphoto" or "photo" blue, but according to the clerks there's no difference, and I haven't noticed a difference between the two.
