Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)

The Bourne Identity..... for the FIRST time

Very good but I hope the sequels are better.
It's like being stuck in 2002.

Dentention (2011)

5.5/10

I like Joseph Khan as a personality but that can't get in the way in how I feel about the movie: It tries way too hard. Really really hard. I know it's suppose to be transgressive and satirical but it didn't do it for me. Plus Dane Cook's in here so negative half a point (To be fair he was good in Louie)

That movie pissed me off to no end. Still the worst movie to come out this year for me.

Beasts of the Southern Wild

Just caught Back to the Future part 2 this morning on TV. Man, hadn't seen that since I was a kid. Even now, that movie is all kinds of great!

It's pretty easy to see why this film has such a negative reception. Critically, it's a Lynch movie through and through and critic types are always going to be divided on him. Financially, it bombed because it was based on a cancelled television show that most people had given up on towards the end. And for fans of the show, I really can't imagine this is what most of them would have wanted from a continuation of the series, especially if they were unfamiliar with some of Lynch's other work.

For me though, I enjoyed it quite a bit. The series only ever hints at the dark underbelly of Twin Peaks, barely giving you even the briefest of glimpses at it. In contrast, this film shows it to you in the cold light of day. Not drowned out by 50's nostalgia, wacky characters, and oddball humor as it is in the show. Which doesn't make it better than the show necessarily, just very different. I actually think the way the movie throws the darker elements in your face all the time isn't as effective as leaving that stuff to your imagination as this sort of omnipresent undercurrent that occasionally bubbles up like in the series. It gives the show a very creepy and sinister tone, even more so the film at times I think.

Unfortunately, just like the series getting cancelled, Fire Walk With Me was to be the start of a Twin Peaks film series that never came to fruition, so once again we're left with characters and plot points that are left unresolved by the end. This didn't affect my enjoyment of the movie really, it just makes me wish things had worked out differently.

It's not for everybody, but I really liked it.

4/5

Absolutely loved every minute of it. Jennifer Lawrence definitely deserves an Oscar nomination for her role as Tiffany here. Cooper surprised me with how good he was, too.

I will definitely be going for a repeat viewing
