Dent, it's quite simple... The minute people heard this show would be a part of the MCU, they expected a weekly episode of The Avengers, a big name cameo (Evans, RDJ, SLJ, etc) every week and production value of the films. That, and everyone wanted and answer of Coulson right away.
People wanted something impossible and jumped immediately saying the show was horrible because it basically isn't the Avengers on tv. Those people need to back up and take the show for what it is (which is what it was promoted as) or go back to watching Avengers Assemble.
That's not why. Most people I know who dislike this show don't care that the Avengers aren't cameoing... people need to stop using this to shut up those of us who aren't impressed with this show. I call it the Prometheus Argument:
"Here is a list of well thought out reasons on why I disliked Prometheus" "You didn't like it cos you expected Alien clone!" "Um, no, I am presenting you with a long list of reasons I didn't like it" "Yeah, you didn't like it cos you expected Alien clone" The situation is identical with AoS; no matter how many times and how many people cite boredom, unlikable characters, mediocre and bad plot, terrible writing or general blandness on not enjoying the show, people who defend it will always bring it down to "you don't like it cos you expected The Avengers!"
The cast has no chemistry with each other, most of them can barely even act.... and then there is Chloe Bennett who can't act period and is playing the worst character to hit television since Scrappy Doo.
Plus there's the writing, yes... Joss Whedon is busy. We get that. But maybe the showrunners shouldn't have been chosen out of nepotism. We have his less talented brother and sister-in-law running the show. There are lots of more talented writer-producers out there who should have gotten this gig.
We live in a golden age of television, and there is no excuse for this crap. "Breaking Bad" had a slow first season, too. But the characters and actors and even the writing were able to keep people's attention. Hell, it took Walter White two episodes to decide if he was going to murder someone he was holding captive, and that was captivating. It's a slow burn, but it's a captivating slow burn.
Only thing I can think of is that they want it to be like Game of Thrones or something, whatever that means.
I would love this, and I will explain to you what this means. We're not talking about content or tone. "Game of Thrones" has a large cast that it juggles beautifully. Hardly anybody feels short changed, and we get to know these people well, we are interested in them, even when it takes a while for the plot to draw us in. All of the actors are wonderful, as is the direction, the cinematography, the writing, etc.
Whereas, Agents of SHIELD is a procedural show with Marvel references that feels like it comes from the era of syndicated, 90's schlock like Jack of All Trades, Mutant X, etc.
