I just saw it. It is absolutely amazing. It is well acted, is funny, clever, has a great plot. Why do so many people here (especially in the Academy Award thread) dislike it?

I thought it was a good movie, that is unessicarly overrated, as a low budget comedy that finds its own crowd it is a great find, an out of nowhere hit, but as a movie that some say is the best movie of 2007 it instantly becomes overrated. I didn't even think it was the best comedy of the year I thought it was around 4th behind Clerks 2, Stranger than Fiction, and Thank You for Smoking

but thats just me, I like it, I think the momment it got nominated for an academy award it went from the underdog movie everyone wanted to root for, to a movie that is really overrated

Clerks 2 and Stranger Than Fiction, and Thank You for Smoking aren't really on the same wave length as Little Miss Sunshine. It is comparing apples to oranges. There was something outside of comedy that made this movie great. It was the heart and it was the characters. I'll take it over another boring Clint Eastwood Oscar bait movie any day.

LMS wasnt as great as people made it out to be, It was very well acted and had a lot of heart. But it just wasnt that great of a movie to me. I chuckled but it wasnt something I burst into tears over.

I agree with that, Clint's gone off the deep end. However, I think most of the critism toward the film has to do with that it's a film that is awesome due to hte sum of it's parts. You pull out Alan Arkin performance, it's not amazing, it's good, you pull out steve carrell's performance it's not amazing, the cinematography, editing, etc... It's one of those films where everything fit perfectly, and if anything it was a contender for best picture. But Arkin winning over Eddie Murphy was not cool. But it was good film and I thought winning best screenplay was deserved.

so what? because it had the gall to accept credit and praise which propelled it out of it's "indie film" genre it's now overrated?
it's as though people are MORE THAN HAPPY to applaud a low budget, low expectation film as long as it stays under the radar.
but the second it becomes more, it becomes something that everyone aknowledges as special and unique it's suddenly overrated?!
wtf kind of logic is THAT?
it's a brilliant script.
it makes fantastic commentary on several social issues while utilizing wit and humor.
it's a fantastically developed satirical comedy with a somewhat dark skew.
i for one am HAPPY it got the recognition that it did and i in no way think it is overrated.

when i think of overrated movies i think of POTC and Spiderman movies that people blow their wad over while buying tickets at the box office and have to make a pit stop to hose down their junk before standing in the concession lines.
ridiculous.

Ive never seen the movie but i got the impression that a lot of the hate for it on here in the run up to the Oscars was down to ppl worrying this little tear jerker was gonna beat The Departed for best movie.

I didn't even know there was hate for the movie, outside of the net it's hard for me to find anyone who has even seen it lol.

Its an alright movie, but considering how much hype surrounded it, i think i was bound to be dissapointed when i finally saw it.

Its over rated.

I think it gets so much hate because it gets built up as like this comedy movie and it is more of a drama with comedic moments sprinkled throughout. I thought it was a fantastic film and deserved the praise it got. It was honestly one of the more well acted movies I saw from last year.

I never disliked it.
I just thought that LFIJ and The Departed were a bit better movies.

Yeah but you can say that for C2, SF, and TYFS too is my point

C2 probably the least of the three but it is a story about 30 something guys who have been stuck in the same place for 10 years going nowhere, feeling even more like insecure loser than they where 10 years ago, and Randal about to face the fact that his only true friend maybe leaving him, its a movie filled with just as much heart and more of a real world situation that even if we aren't stuck in a dead end just, even if you just have a normal life, or if your well off, its emotions that everyone has or will go through in there life

Stranger Than Fiction imo was the smartest movie of the year, it plays out like a literary novel, Her reasoning for not killing Harlod Crick was just short of one of the most brilliant reasons to do something I have seen in a movie. I don't get bent up on what movie has better acting than what, because the good movies generally all have good acting, and the bad ones generally have bad acting in it, but I do take note when an actor acts outside of his assumed abilities, and Will Ferrel possibley played the second most sympathetic character that was in a movie this year behined Will Smith imo I would say of the 3 I have mentioned, this one is for sure, and hands down better than LMS to me

Thank You For Smoking-an unapologeticly clever movie that makes a satire about politics and political correctness, and puts the podium right in the middle, not taking a side

Granted a Kevin Smith movie being nominated for a serious award is like saying a comic book movie is, it could be as good as V for Vendetta or Batman Begins (which where each one of the 4 best movies of the year in their respected years) but because it is a comic book movie the academy doesn't really give them the credit they deserve (not saying clerks 2 should have been nominated for best picture, just saying Chasing Amy should have).

But in saying that, if LMS is nominated for Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor/Actress, and Best Screenplay

imo both movies can top them in each catergory

Best Actor-I think Ferrel should have got a nod, and also Eckhart from Somking
Best Supporting Actor/Actress-Hoffman, Gyllenhaal
Best Screen play-easily, both are tones better, but all screenplays should bow to Pan's Labrynth anyways so it shouldn't matter

thats just the way i look at it

LMS was a good underdog movie, but once it becomes an Academy Awards Best Picture candidate instantly gets credit it does not deserve, and is overrated imo

Well here is the thing LMS was not one of the 4 best movies last year, and because it got nominated for the award of best picture it instantly can brag about that

POTC, and Spiderman are shooting for no awards, they are shooting for fans, and they accomplish that, I am probably the only person on these boards that has said POTC is the best movie ever, and I don't even believe that it just comes out every now and then. But they aren't made to be the best films ever, they are made to be the most entertaining films ever and both(Pirates and Spiderman) succeed like few other movies can imo

LMS was a movie made to play to the indie ciricle(because its a Fox Searchlight production, got nothing against them I Heart Huckabees is one of my favorite movies ever, but they release movies that play towards the indie crowd), which it did, and indie film guys thought it was great, and once something gets the indie stamp of apporval it will storm the tip of the mainstream like LMS did, cause all people wish to think their taste in movies is better than the next, so if pretentious film snobs say its good most people will flock to it

I think indie movies can be great cause they generally are an outside of the box method of thinking, that a big studio doesn't want to take a chance on cause it hasn't proven itself a money maker yet (See Memento). But LMS is not outside of the box, to me it feels like Full House on Wheels, or a National Lampoons Vacation movie without Chevy Chase

It's a good but not great movie IMHO. I didn't see anything amazing about it. The Departed was amazing, The Prestige was amazing but LMS? not so much.

"overrated" is being overused these days

i think the term is "overhyped" and many would probably be underwhelmed if they were expecting an all out comedy like "Clerks 2"...LMS is more subtle and the comedic moments are "sprinkled" throughout the entire family drama

Oh please, The Prestige is overrated among fanboys. It is good, did it deserve the countless Oscar's many people on here seem to think? No. It is pretty much just a fanboy's wet dream "OMGZ! BATMAN AND WOLVERINE AND SCARLETZ BOOBS! LMAO! THIS MOVIE PWNZ!!!"
