being the adament Pink Panther fan that i am, i got to wondering which Panther films were the more popular around here...

personally, it's a tough choice for me, because - as i said - i'm a huge fan of the series, but my three favorites are Shot in the Dark, Return, and the newest one, with Steve Martin... hilarious stuff! :woot: ...if i really have to narrow it down to just one response, though, i'll go with A Shot in the Dark... i honestly don't see how that film could ever have been improved upon! just classic stuff, IMO!

The Steve Martin one???? I haven't seen it, but if the movie is anything like the trailer, its a steaming pile of ****. I don't even really want to see it.

Personally I like Pink Panther '63 and A Shot in the Dark.

honestly, when i saw the trailer and commercials for it, i was pretty worried about it, myself, but once i saw the film, it was much better than i expected... trailers are often misleading, are they not? ;)

The Original Pink Panther is the Best of all of them.
A Shot in the Dark is a very close second.

i'm actually surprised to see so many people voting for the 1963 Pink Panther movie, since Clouseau wasn't the lead character, and while it's still a comedy, it's not as openly slapstick as most of the sequels were... hmmph... interesting!

I'm disgusted that A Shot In The Dark and the crappy remake have the same amount of votes.

Shame on the people who voted for the crappy remake.

A Shot In The Dark is the best and most perfect Clouseau film. It's also one of the only ones without the Pink Panther in it.

Anyone know what the hell the story is on Inspector Clouseau? Why the hell was Alan Arkin of all people cast as Clouseau?

A Shot in the Dark, definitely.

But Clouseau -- What are you thinking? Being the die-hard Pink Panther fan you appear to be, how can the cinematic waste that was made in 2006 be so high on your top list??

well perhaps i'm partially biased by the fact that i've also always been a Steve Martin fan, but i've tried to put that aside as much as possible, and honestly, i still found it to be a hilarious film... when i saw it in the theater the first time, i nearly fell out of my seat more than once because i was laughing so hard! i'll grant that Martin's Clouseau is very dissimilar to Sellers' - and that was intentional on Martin's part, from what i've read - but that didn't detract from the humor for me...

perhaps i just have a warped sense of humor to start with... *shrug* ;) :woot:
wouldn't surprise me... :oldrazz:

I'm as big of a Martin fan as anyone, but this remake was just lame.

The only good thing about it was it made you really appreciate how amazing Sellers was.

A Shot in the Dark.

It was a pretty perfect mix of the more...refined comedy of the first film, and the zany slapstick of the later films.

I am also a fan of Steve Martin, which is why I hate the new Pink Panther movie, because it's one of Martin's worst efforts. I can't believe he actually wrote it, STEVE MARTIN.

Ugh.

I love the pink panther film. My favourite one is the first one, but i also loved a shot in the dark and return of the pink panther. The remake and the sequels without Sellers were crap.

Also, Peter Sellers is one of the genious in cinema story , and his closseau was one of my favourite film characters.

i agree that Sellers was genius at times... his various accents always impress me, especially since you didn't see a lot of people doing accents like he did back in those days... Dr. Strangelove was an excellent example, because he did three separate accents, and with the makeup job, if you didn't know which roles he was supposed to be, you would have probably thought the only character he played was Group Commander Mandrake! similarly, whenever he slipped into the Clouseau accent, if you didn't know better, you could almost buy that that's the way he really talked in real life, because as messed up as it was, he made it sound natural!

on that ground i'll grant you that Steve Martin - and Roberto Benigni in Son, for that matter - has a ways to go, because as funny as the film was, i still have to admit that the accent and mannerisms just don't feel natural... it's farcically funny, but you don't buy that he really could talk and act like that in real life the way you did with Sellers... know what i mean?

the movie was even a bigger pile of **** than the trailer, I don't know what the hell were the Studios thinking when they green lit it.

A Shot in the Dark is a work of cinematic genius. It set the tone for the rest of the franchise, and it was the best-written one.

I decided not to see the 2006 movie. There's just no way I can accept Steve Martin as Clouseau. Not just because Peter Sellers played the character first, but because Steve Martin is getting to be one of those actors who doesn't play a character so much as he's Steve Martin playing a character.

Okay, let me try that again. You ever watch a movie with Steve Martin, but you never remember his character's name? And you never cared what his character's name was? That's Martin's problem. People don't see the character he's trying to play. If his character's name is Peter, no one will notice. He's just himself. People always see Steve Martin, not the character.

It's kinda like Christopher Walken. Can anyone name a character he's played (other than Gabriel) in the past 10 years without looking it up?

Oddly, my problem with Steve Martin as Clouseau (from the trailers, at least:o) is that Clouseau is so not like Steve Martin. I mean, is the guy from Father of the Bride the same dude from Bringing Down the House? Yeah. But I like that dude! That dude pretending to be Clouseau...isn't quite as appealing.

I agree with you. People like Martin or Benigni looked too forced playing Closseau. Peter did it in a more natural way.

Also, maybe Peter was the bes actor ever playing acents and different characters( except alec guinness, maybe). From the Goon show to the pink panther movies, from doctor strangelove to the party, from being there to murder by the death, from lolita to whats up pussycat or casino royale. I have seen real interviews with peter and it was pure genious. The guy could do any voice and any acent about any character that you could suggest to him. Pure genious.

yep...

i'm surprised, too, that nobody's voted for Return, and only one person's voted for Strikes Again... those two have always been very popular among most folks i know... weird...

ah well...

I gotta go with Return of the Pink Panther. I love that one. His attempts at the incredible 'Dragon Kick' have scared me into NOT trying them.

Seriously, he brings the house down and everything inside the room with that thing.

yeah, those flying kicks are something else, i'll tell ya! :)

my favorite bit from Return, though, was when he impersonated a telephone repairman in order to attempt to spy on the Littons... that bit has got to be one of my favorites from the entire series! :)

btw, here's a nice tribute to Sellers' Clouseau, featuring some of his best moments... http://youtube.com/watch?v=Nzbw43nHEAY

out of the ones i've watched, the return of the pink panther gets my vote....
