Sucks we have to wait for all these ****** reboots to be made before Marvel can make a proper version of their own.

It is possible that may never get all of their rights back unless Disney gets their lawyers to really go after the other companies, but even then those contracts are air-tight.

Marvel sold those rights when they were nearing bankruptcy so I don't think they were think they could be successful enough to independently produce films.

I think down the line they might be able to come to an agreement with Sony regarding the use of Spider-Man, go into producing the films together.

Fox is not gonna let go of the characters they own in any way, shape or form.

Whenever the Spider-Man and X-Men movies quit making lots and lots of money for Sony and Fox, that's when.

They should've put a ten year limit on the rights.

I mean seriously, Sony and Fox could keep Spider-man and X-men forever if they wanted to...Dumb.

^ It wasn't dumb at the time they did it, it was business. Marvel was nearing bankruptcy so they gave up the rights for as much money as they can. They figured with that deal, they can make more money for the rights.

I don't blame Marvel one bit for getting rid of the rights because they absolutely had to.

Yeah, Hindsight is 20/20. At the time it was a great idea. Had they known they would one day start their own successful independent film company and then later be bought out by Disney and gaining a bottomless wallet with which to make any film they wanted, they wouldn't have made those deals. But they didn't. Hell, if they didn't sell those film rights, X-Men wouldn't have been made and started the huge comic film boom that made their little independent film company happen, which lead to Disney deciding to buy them out in the first place.

Still, when you consider all the money they have made and will make off the movies all these other companies are making, they've got it pretty good. If it sucks, eh, they still get paid.

And Marvel doesn't even need those licenses to be successful. It sucks that those characters won't be in this Universe, but they're not essential to have considering all the licenses they do have.

I understand that with a number of Marvel film characters. There's some sort of contract clause which states that as long as a film is made every 'X' years, they get to keep them. Is there any way Marvel Studios can some how tempt one of the big companies to sell off the rights? Perhaps they can strike a distribution deal so that they can use characters such as Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe?

I just came across this this quote:

"It seems a little bit strange to me," he admitted, "but he's a terrific actor and has a great personality... [but when it comes to playing both] I'm glad I'm not the producer... The problem is that some other movie companies have the rights to some of the characters but, after a few years, Marvel will get them all back... sooner or later they will get [a single movie universe], absolutely."

I hope he'll be right! I really like the idea of the MCU growing and developing more characters. It's funny, it can be seen as mirroring our own universe. In that it's continuously expanding with new 'life' being brought to an ever increasing world.

The film companies probably feel that they can make more money making films featuring Spider-Man and the X-Men then they could with whatever money Marvel offered them for those characters. They're both billion dollar franchises for Sony and Fox. For them, it's a matter of the long-term over the short term. For Disney/Marvel, it may not be worth paying so much money when they can just develop the characters that they do have the rights to.

As far as Stan's quote, I think it's just wishful thinking and his always-positive attitude.

I haven't read the contracts so I can't say what all the conditions are, but there have to be conditions.

Nobody signs away the rights to anything until the end of time without very specific conditions defined in the contract.

We just don't know what those conditions are.

I think it is possible that Marvel will probably never get the Spider-man and X-Men rights back, since both are very profitable franchises and their studios can conceivably reboot or spin-off them forever. However, I think for the other, "lesser" properties like Fantastic Four, Daredevil, and Ghost Rider, I can see the wells eventually drying up and their studios no longer want to keep churning them out in theatres just for the sake of holding on to the rights, and I think within 10-15 years we'll see all three returning to Marvel Studios. Anyway, that's my hope.

haha, never...

unless us lot boycott the films until they do so, which is very possible but i don't think we have the bottle to do so as a fan base.

if money talks and we want them to give marvel back their goodies, it's up to us to make their next batch of films flop

I won't be doing that. I loved X-Men: First Class and was rooting for its success, and I hope The Amazing Spider-Man is also a great movie and I will be rooting for its success, as well.

well no uberly duberly tie ins then....

but who needs a tie in universe anywho. sometimes it's nice to have some stuff a little separate.

Singer's X-Men > Marvel's film work so far.

I don't care if Marvel never get the rights back.

I know its a matter of opinion...but really? Better than Cap, Iron Man, and Thor? Wow...speechless

I agree with him. X2 and X-Men: First Class were both better than Thor and Captain America, and on par, or even slightly better, than Iron Man.

I find Iron Man way better than X2, slighter better than first Class.

Captain America I find better than X2, but on par with First Class.

Thor I don't find better than X2 or First Class.

I don't care if Marvel never gets the Spider-man or X-men rights back either though. The only one I really care that Marvel gets the rights back to are Fantastic Four.

Ditto. Ghost Rider, Daredevil, Spider-Man, X-Men can stay with Fox/Sony forever for all I care (and Spidey and X-Men probably will). Just Fantastic Four NEEDS to be back in Marvel's possession.

LOL, no they weren't.

Iron Man alone was better than the first two Wolverine and His Somewhat Amazing Friends movies.

I like X2 as well, but to say that it is far away better than any Marvel Studios movie is something I don't agree with. X2 was good, but it wasn't without its problems, such as the (again) insignificant presence of Cyclops, the overwhelming focus on Wolverine & lack of development for other X-Men, and the ending that could've been awesome if not for its follow-up movie. Anyway, the X-Men franchise under Fox has had hits-and-misses, and I don't think it's a bad idea to give the franchise back the Marvel once Fox has done all their could with this property.
