This year, we were promised great summer blockbusters, superman returns and POTC 2, yet both of these films massively underachieved, so what happened? Any thoughts? I'm just about giving up on hollywood blockbusters now, they just can't be great films anymore, mediocre at best.

Yes, we were promised great summer blockbusters out of Superman and POTC2.

And for me, they delivered on that promise.

They delivered for me as well.

I can't see superman returns being worth $200 million, surely they should have done something better with all that money? hire better writers perhaps!

Agreed.

The best film this year was brought to us by woody allen, how do these films reflect the budget in quality?

How did Pirates "underachieve?"

It broke several box office records, and it's well on it's way to grossing $300+ million in domestic box office alone.

So far ive seen 5 of the supposed summer blockbusters(missed Posiedon) and 3 of them ive enjoyed so i don't see an issue

I'm talking about quality of film, not of earnings or quality of marketing

Well that is completely subjective

I thought DMC was better than the first film, and the first was great.

Let me guess the other two.
X3 and MI:III?

I know. Pirate's strong box office is a pretty good indication that the general public think it is a good movie.

X-3, how was that a good film?
MI:III, wow, i've never seen that story before, such a basic action film
Superman: Worst super villain plot ever! First half was OK, but the second dragged on a bit
POTC 2: Wow, an hour and a half of sea, that was so worth a fiver.

You enjoyed MI3? You don't say... :p ;)

Come on now, MI3 was... average...

Not horrible...

Better than MI2.

Because the earth doesn't share your mind and tastes.
And we all thank god for that.
