The Phantom Menace has a nice mysterious quality to it. Some of the others are so on the nose that they're one step away from Star Wars: Goodguys Beat the Badguys.
I think The Empire Strikes Back has the best everything, title included. It's supposed to sound cheesy like the old sci-fi films and/or like a news article or something.
See, if I didn't know what Star Wars was, I would argue that 'The Phantom Menace' is the best title. But because there's baggage with that title (the movie didn't live up to the mystery), it tainted my view on how it is perceived.
Return of the Jedi is my favorite title by a long shot. Followed by:
Revenge of the Sith
A New Hope
The Empire Strikes Back
The Force Awakens (I can't believe I get to include a new title in this lineup )
The Phantom Menace
Attack of the Clones
I don't hate any of them. Lucas always gave the titles a nice pulpy vibe and varied them very well. I'm curious to know whether The Force Awakens was always Lucas's intended title for 7 or whether he had a different title(s) in his notes for the sequel trilogy.
Both had huge ramifications for star wars fans. Clones especially, when that was announced, people were like "OH SHIZ OBI WAN TALKED ABOUT THE CLONE WARS!"
I do, however, remember most fans thinking the title was stupid right after it was announced (some guy on the production team wore the title on his t-shirt and pulled back his over-shirt to reveal it). We were hoping for something like "Fall of the Republic".
