Which Superhero films belong in the National Film Registry?

  • No Country for Old Men (2007)

Two great villains

It says in the article that Spy Kids was considered as "culturally significant".
Damn they chose a Banderas movie, and went with Spy Kids :funny:
Missed the opportunity to have a 3rd Zorro film (the proto-superhero) on there.

I think Latino voters are just trolling, and having fun (or overcompensating for a century of neglect) :funny:
  • American Me (1992)
  • Mi Familia (1995)
  • Spy Kids (2001)
  • Up in Smoke (1978)

Athough there is no denying that last one. :cwink:

I know the Burton fanboys have to be mad that "Spy Kids" got in before B89. :o

Even then, surely something like Pan's Labyrinth or Y Tu Mamá También would make more sense to add to the registry than Spy Kids. I would have said Robert Rodriguez's first film El Mariachi but that's been in there for over a decade.

Could be it's assumed they have to be "National" Films?
To be eligible for the National Film Registry, a film must meet the following criteria:
  • Be at least 10 years old
  • Be "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant"
  • Be American-made
  • Have at least one copy in existence

I guess we have to recognize the fact that Spy Kids had a greater cultural impact, for those who cared to vote this year. Sometimes joyful nonsensical low-budget family films that nobody expected, count. :cwink:
I might actually watch it now. :funny:
The film “Spy Kids” stars Antonio Banderas as Gregorio Cortez. The name is a nod to Hispanic heritage and the famous Gregorio Cortez. The movie “The Ballad of Gregorio Cortez” was added to the National Film Registry in 2022. “Spy Kids” is Antonio Banderas’s first film on the registry.
Interesting fact, I did not know his character was a nod to Gregorio Cortez, an obscure film staring Olmos, I saw as a kid, that hit me deep, when there was still a dearth of latino lead representation in American film.
Rodriguez would have been about 14 when he saw it.
This stuff leaves a mark.

I know the Burton fanboys have to be mad ....
Blame it on Fairbanks, or Frank Miller

It'd be wild if Birdamn gets on there first (it's officially been 10 years), will the Hype aknowledge it as a "Superhero" or Superhero adjacent film though?

I bet the rest of the tdk trilogy gets in before 89 Batman

All Marvel films (1998 onwards)

If I was in charge, I would dedicate a separate category just for Marvel movies!
