Now I know that Civil War isn't officially released yet but the buzz has been incredible and several reviews have said that the Captain America trilogy could be the best Superhero trilogy ever. So this begs the question, which do you think is better (or will be considered better in the long run): Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy or Marvel's Captain America trilogy?

Been thinking about starting a thread just like this, but I was going to wait until the movie had come out. Either way I think it could potentially be a valid question if Civil War lives up to the hype.
If CW is better than it's predecessor then it has at least bested TDKT in ending on a better note.

I just voted anyways since I liked all three Nolan films better than either of the two Cap films. Civil War would basically have to be Lawrence of Arabia for me to change my mind.

CW would have to be my favorite CBM ever, and still, I'm not sure I would rate it better. I have both BB and TDK in my Top 5 (WS is about 6 or 7) and while I did not like TDKR, I like it a lot more than TFA (which I rewatched a few weeks back and was bored out of my mind).

I will see CW with an open mind, but this is wayyyyy too early.

I'm sure CW will be very good, as in fun and action packed, but I would be very surprised if it rivalled the triumph that was TDK !

I did enjoy TWS, and thought it a good film, but I don't put it in the same league as TDK.

But hey, that's just me. Cheers.

Cap Trilogy, CW now with positive reviews and high score 100% in RT with 15 vote, but waiting until 200 reviews for more safe

I won't vote until I've seen Civil War, but I'm 99% sure I'll stick with TDKT. BB and TDK are on another level.

So far:

TDK - 9
TDKR - 8
BB - 7

Cap 1 - 7.5
WS - 9
CW - ???

Civil War just needs an 8 and the Cap trilogy wins for me.

I was going to do this thread too, lol.

Should've known someone was going to make it two or three weeks early. :woot:

I almost feel I should vote on this now, because I rate BB higher than TFA, and TDK higher than TWS. So even if I end up loving CW more than TDKR, the TDKT will still be the winner overall for me.

They are 1-1 after the first two for me.

I actually hold Begins as the best Batman movie so that gets the nod over The First Avenger. A bit surprisingly TDK has not had the best rewatchability for me so TWS gets the nod there. The flaws of TDK become more apparent each time, while the flaws in TWS have not to the same extent.

So it will come down to TDKR vs Civil War, and the odds are in favor of CW taking it, although I will of course not decide until I've seen it. I think the Russos are better at handling emotional connections than Nolan, who is a bit cold in his storytelling, and I expect CW to have better executed action.

If CW is as good as it looks (and that's certainly not a given, despite glowing early reactions) I would consider calling them the best directors in superhero movies. Not that their movies necessarily would be my two favorites, but they will in that case have realized so much potential in what they've done. For me Nolan has been better with his original stuff, both before and after Batman.

8 people voted and they probably haven't seen CW yet. :argh:

C'mom guys, let's not stoop to imdb's level.

Since nobody on here has seen Civil War yet, this thread is silly.

With that said, Nolan made three great movies, and I don't think Captain America has one yet (never cared for TFA and TWS is good but not nearly as masterful as folks around here make it out to be). So while I do hope the buzz is accurate for Civil War, it would be an uphill battle for it to win this comparison.

I have the same temptation since this poll is for overeager Marvel fans to declare some kind of victory over DC.

The truth of the matter though is The Dark Knight, and thus by extension its trilogy, is the only superhero movie to date to rise above the genre to the point where it is mentioned in the same lists as The Godfather, Goodfellas, and The Bridge on the River Kwai. I highly doubt Civil War will reach such heights, nor do I think Feige is particularly interested in making what is considered iconic cinema or achieving some higher form of artistic recognition. He wants to make fun movies that feed the hype for the next one.

So in that sense, I think we can already say we know which trilogy will be well remembered in years to come, and it is the one that already is so well received. Just a hunch.

I can see people generally saying:

TDK > WS = BB > TDKR > TFA

(Many agree TDK is the best superhero movie but I don't know many people who think WS was worse than BB or TDKR)

So if CW is better than WS, this could be a close battle.

Take away Ledger's performance and TDK is another TDKR.

It's not the Godfather, lol.

If it was, it would've won Best Picture, instead it wasn't even nominated.

How does taking away a performance negate great writing and cinematography?

TDK has some good writing and decent acting but it's not on the Godfather's level.

Those are the Nolan goggles talking.

The main reason it's put on a pedestal is Ledger's Joker.

He made a good movie an iconic classic.

TOOOOO SOOOOON

can we not make these vs threads when the movies haven't even come out yet?!

Thanks

As amazing as Ledger was, Nolan wrote the part and conceived of it in his film. It may not have been nominated for Best Picture, but its omission is why today we have up to 10 nominees instead of 5.

And I don't think it is in the same ballpark as The Godfather or Goodfellas.

But Hollywood producers, studio executives, and industry insiders do: http://www.listchallenges.com/hollywoods-100-favorite-films-hollywood-reporter

As do an international group of professional film critics: http://www.bbc.com/culture/story/20150720-the-100-greatest-american-films

I would also add on a personal note that I think Batman Begins is vastly superior to The Winter Soldier and I know that is not a rarity. I also think The Dark Knight Rises is a much smarter and better made film, but that I will concede is an unpopular opinion around these parts. But I suspect history will show one lasting far longer in popular culture, if only by association to The Dark Knight, it still will.

Why is it that in comic book forums people keep dismissing TDK Rises?

I think TFA is better than BB. TDK is better than TWS. I'm not sure how much better CW would have to be over TDKR for me to choose the Cap Trilogy.

Also saying taking away this or taking away that from a movie makes it less is so silly and redundant. If we take Hannibal Lecter out of The Silence of the Lambs the movie isn't half of what it is. If we take Darth Vader out of The Empire Strikes Back it's a shadow of itself etc.
