noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo, i will forever be know as the guy who made a mistake, fixed it, but left a trail of evidence lol
oh and i'm doing DC as well as Marvel, one big figure display, so what are your thoughts Morg?

I'm more of a DC fan :hehe:

Spider-Man, Hulk, Captain America, Iron man, and Wolverine. That's the most popular if that's what you mean by pivotal.

Personally, I'd go with Cap, Iron Man, and Thor and call it a day.

id throw iron man and hulk in to that list as well and you'd pretty much have the essentials down. i mean, i guess there's still the Fantastic Four, but when it comes to plain and simple bankability i think those guys are your big hitters.

ok how bout 15 big essentials, and 5 ones with followings

Pivotal?

Surfer
Cap
Reed Richards
Hulk
Thor
Iron Man
Professor Xavier

spiderman should be an anti-pivotal hero since he was supposed to represent the everyday hero.

Fifteen? You'll be hard pressed to find that many that you would consider "pivotal".

Uh, Hulk, Cap, Iron Man, Thor, Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Human Torch, the Thing, Spider-Man, Cyclops, Wolverine, Phoenix, Storm, Black Panther, annnd Silver Surfer.

And I'll also throw in Professor X though he's been less important in recent years.

Most Iconic and representative of the MU:
Hulk, Spider-Man, Iron Man, Thor, Wolverine, Dr. Strange, Captain America, Daredevil, the Fantastic Four.

Less popular Marvel characters that are still awesome.
Deadpool, Iron Fist, Luke Cage, Black Panther, She-Hulk, and I can't really think of any more right now...

ahhhh iconic, that was a much better word i should have used. very helpful mr green.

i think i got most of them covered, in plastic form

Ah, but do you have Paste Pot Pete?

If you think long and Hard..the top 2 answers are going to be SENTRY and IRON MAN. (at least in the past 5 years, as depicted in comics)

SENTRY is a constant force who can just show up and end any threat. Bendis has used him A lot in this erratic manner..to the point of being cliche.

Iron Man is everwhere..the Marvel Universe revolves around him.

Iron Man (obviously, the scope of his power is more than just his armor), Captain America (his influence is iconic in nature - most of the the Marvel heroes worhip Cap and what he stands for-he's Marvel's greatest and most influential leader, Thor (because of his power alone) and depending on wheter he's feeling like a hero or not, the Hulk (again because of his raw power). Also, members of the Illuminati (not already mentioned) are obviously of great charismatic/power influence (Namor, Blackbolt, Dr. Strange, etc....)

When someone thinks Marvel:
-Spider-Man
-Iron Man
-Wolverine
-Cyclops
-Incredible Hulk
-Captain America

Not as well known by still awesome:
-Deadpool
-Punisher
-Daredevil
-Beast haha I LIKE HIM

Marvel's basically got a big 10...7 solo heroes and 3 teams.

01. Spider-Man
02. Captain America
03. Wolverine
04. Iron Man
05. Hulk
06. Thor
07. Daredevil

Teams:

01. X-Men
02. Fantastic Four
03. Avengers

Those 7 individuals and 3 teams have almost always had on-goings that were more often than not successful.

If I had to pick a top 20 Marvel names list:

Captain America
Cyclops
Daredevil
Dr. Strange
Ghost Rider
Hulk
Human Torch
Invisible Woman
Iron Man
Jean Grey
Mr. Fantastic
Professor X
Punisher
Silver Surfer
Spider-Man
Storm
Sub-Mariner
Wolverine
Thing
Thor

Reason for exclusions:

- Black Panther meets all the requirements, I just think Dr. Strange and Namor (who were at the bottom of the list) have a little more overall exposure.
- Ms. Marvel, Luke Cage, Hercules, Nova, etc are just having their moment in the sun. Characters like Giant Man, The Black Knight, Captain Marvel, Cable, Hawkeye, Deathlok, Sleepwalker, Black Widow and others had their moments and it passed. Every Marvel character gets to be an a-lister for a day.
- Emma Frost still seems forced into the X-Men to me...and without any movie appearances yet, she still doesn't have the cache of the other X-Men I listed.
- She-Hulk and Spider-Woman: I automatically dock points when you're a female version or a kid version of someone. I guess Ms. Marvel would fall under that category too, but her predecessor, Captain Marvel, died nearly 30 years ago.
- Blade, despite his cinematic success is basically a non-presence in comic books. I didn't know who Blade even was prior to the movies, and I was a comic geek; that says something.
- Deadpool is a very niche based character that I love, but I wouldn't call him a top name or a pivotal one. Most of his adventures are so off the wall and have little or no impact on the rest of the MU. He's very self-contained I guess.

In terms of in universe that's exactly right.

Captain America, Thor, Captain Britain, The Illuminati (I'd add Black Bolt to your list in place of Wanda. She's basically a non-factor at the moment.)

yeah i was gonna put black bolt in..but didn't..don't know why because black bolt is a fantastic charcter too!!

I guess i can replace wanda witrh BB...she was only pivotal in one bit..very pivotal indeed..but only in the one bit.

others who are pivotal but not heroes are doom and magneto i'd say too...

I agree with the majority of this list, but I would add Cyclops instead of Wanda, since he is the poster child for mutant relations in the MU right now, making him a hugely important character in the grand scheme of things.
