Right now i think the crown has to go to PT Anderson. Every movie he has made has been nothing short of a masterpiece and every movie has been significantly different from the last. I think honorable mentions for me right now are Coen Brothers, and Christopher Nolan(Dual Citizenship counts in my book). Each film of theirs have been nothing short of magnificant. Who do you guys think are the best american directors right now?

Tim Burton. I'm sure some others may disagree, but he's one of the best IMO.

he definitly has his style and look to his movies, he had some classics in the 80s and 90s and it seems like its starting to carry over to the 21st century

Yep. And I'm definately looking forward to his Alice in Wonderland.

I don't think I can narrow my pick to just one director, but here's a few from my personal Top 10...

In No Particular Order...

Sam Raimi
Paul Greengrass
Greg Beeman & James Marshall (TV directors)
Richard Donner
Russell Mulcahy

Martin Scorsese has been consistently good over the years with :

Taxi Driver
Raging Bull
Goodfellas
Cape Fear
Casino
Gangs Of NY
The Aviator
The Departed

and i cant wait for his new movie shutter island

but fincher is really good now also if he goes back to what he did in usual suspects and x men 1 and 2 brian singer can be really good again

when you say "right now", does it mean directors who are still working? So I can pull a John ford on you guys right?

Spielberg, Scorsese, and Tim Burton.

Currently directing in this day and age?

David Mamet.

David Mamet, Sidney Lumet.. there are plenty of good directors in the US

There are some amazing directors out there, but I wouldn't call them my favorite. To me, the best director are the ones that entertain me.

Kevin Smith
Tarantino
Spielberg
Raimi

Got plenty of more directors I love but they haven't directed movies in a long while.

Of the old timers, I'd say Martin Scorsese is hands down the best American director.

Of the "newer" directors, I'd say Paul Thomas Anderson is on his way up there.
