If he was like, 20 years younger, then Timothy Dalton would've been my first choice to play Tony Stark in an Iron Man movie. Apparently, many comic book artists, such as Alex Ross, have used Dalton's likeness for Tony Stark.

Yep, in the 80s either Dalton or Tom Selleck and the 90s, Pierce Brosnan.

anyone who can pull off a moustache/ small goatee look and still be sophisticated

pierce bronsnan, timothy dalton, anyone who has ever been in line to play james bond basically.

I've always thought George Clooney would be good for Stark.

No iron for you!

What about Sam Rockwell, who Favreau has said before was one of his choices before casting Downey?

That said, Jim Caviezal used to be my top choice back in the day.

Downey Jr is the man, but I wouldn't have minded seeing Josh Brolin in the role either.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan could have pulled it off, IMO. His Comedian was great.

Wow, it's really difficult to imagine anyone else playing the role nowadays. RDJ more or less owns that role right now.

I completely agree with the original poster about Timothy Dalton, though. If this were 20 years ago, he'd probably be my first pick.

Ill get killed for this.. but... Tom Cruise would have been a good Stark

Errol Flynn. Him and Howard Hughes were the models Lee used when he created Tony Stark.

Of course he died in 1959.......
