They were most likely NOT looking for 'Venom' at all but an evil version of Spider-Man since that's how he's written. So, basically they were looking for Spider-Man all over again. Maybe Jake Gyllenhall was also considered... but Topher's way better!

As funny as that sounds it wasn't the case. Raimi probably saw him in that Good Company movie with Dennis Quaid and was impressed.

I was just wondering, because I agree he isn't really playing Venom, he is playing Eddie Brock more so. And he really doesn't have the Brock-physique that plenty of other actors do. So I was curious if he actually had to compete with other actors for this role, but I do agree with the in good company comment above. His performance was very different from his Erica Foreman role, and it did show that he has the versatility to perform dramatically.

I have this film and whats interesting is that, Grace is pretty much playing the role of an older, much more successful Eric Foreman. He retains his wit and comic timing. I guess, Raimi was too damn eager to have him instead of holding out for Topher to take up the red and blues once Maguire's ass left.

That is absolutley true. The reaction on the hype was pretty big when the person cast as Brock was found, maybe the studio then realised that Brock might be too much of an important character to introduce vaguley in the background

True. Well, ive read somewhere that they decided to not cast the guy because they knew he wouldnt be venom, so they didnt wanted to mismatch the role for the upcoming movie.

There was too much with the origin story to get into another sub-plot. However I wouldn't have minded seeing topher as brock introduced vaguely in SM2... possibly they could've had him as "the new guy" at the bugle or something.
