Cosby for Huxtable, if only for the Monoploy money scene with his son. That scene is pure gold.
I give it to Uncle Phil. This is a guy who clearly loved not only his children, but was willing to take a non-blood relative and raise him and love him as his own. You have to respect that. Kudous to Uncle Phil![]()
I agree. I like Uncle Phil a lot more than Cliff Huxtable (Bill Cosby) because he was more realistic. I love The Cosby Show. It's a great show. HOWEVER, about 90% of the show is full of crap.
Exactly. Uncle Phil wasn't above getting mad at his children, or yelling at his children. He wasn't perfect...but at the end of the day he always loved them more than anything and that is what makes him the greatest TV dad ever.
The problem with Cosby Show is that they never really spiced it up. Example: In one episode, Vanessa, gets into a fight with some girls in school because they called her a "rich girl". Why would ANYONE get into a fight because of that? They should have made her get into a fist fight for some more, I don't know, serious and realistic.
Another good example is when Denise got married with some guy who already had a kid. It took guts for Cosby to do that, but why couldn't the kid be hers? Lisa Bonet left A Different World and took off a year from Cosby Show cause she got pregnant. They should have written that into the show instead of giving Bonet a year off.
Here's another example. When Theo was in college they discovered that he had dsylexia which explained why he was such a bad student in High School. Why couldn't he have just been stupid? The guy had five kids. His first, Sondra, was a genius who graduated from Princeton. His fourth and fifth children, Vanessa and Rudy, were pretty smart as well. So, would it have REALLY hurt to make Theo and Denise the two stupid ones? At the end of the day Denise is the only screwed up one that was only cause they were reflecting Lisa Bonet's real life.
They already treaded that territory in all the African-American comedies of the 60s and 70s. The point of the Cosby show was to depict a well off black family, that handled issues anyone regardless of race could relate to.
And they weren't perfect.
Problem is that no one can relate to the Cosby Show. I mean...a doctor married to a lawyer. That marriage working was a miracle.
I prefer the Fresh Prince, but they were way different in terms of humor.See, Fresh Prince did EXACTLY what Cosby Show did only way better.
What Fresh Prince improved on Cosby Show:
- Lawyer married to college professor. That's more realistic than doctor and laywer.
- Kids picked on for being "white" and not "rich" like on Cosby.
-Episodes revolving around sex, which Cosby only did once in that Pam episode.
- Uncle Phil had a heart attack due to his weight problem. NOW, while Cliff Huxtable wasn't in bad shape a running joke on the show was Clair telling Cliff that he never took care of himself.
-Phil and Vivian seperated for a few days when Phil wanted to run for Governor. Cliff and Clair NEVER had any problems which is completely unrealistic.
-Not all the kids were perfect. Will had potential but always screwed up. Carlton was smart but naive. Hilary was hot but a moron. Ashley was like the only kid who turned out pretty good.
That's just your cynicism talking.![]()

I don't even think I saw the episode you're talking about.
True, but there weren't too many family comedies dealing with sex in the early 80s/90s.
They had there spats, but yeah for the most part they got along. That doesn't mean they were less realistic.
Theo was clearly the dumb one
Vanessa was whiny.
Denise dropped out of school and got married to some guy she'd known for barely a year.
Sorry, but no.Alfred Pennyworth
He help raised the world's second greatest detective and his ward.
A doctor and a lawyer would barely see each other. Both professions require A LOT of work hours. That marriage wouldn't have worked as a result.
They were both greats and it wasn't often that they'd play up stereotypes like their predecessors(though Will wasn't much different than JJ from Good Times, except better looking).Yeah, the humor is the polar opposite. However, the approach was the same. It's two sitcoms about well off African American families who have problems that people, regardless of race, can relate to. EXCEPT when it dealt with episodes like Will and Carlton getting pulled over for a driving an expensive car.
They never quite came out and said that(aside from the ep. where Carlton wasnt accepted into the black fraternity) but yes, I know.A running joke on Fresh Prince was that Carlton was too white.
As for Cosby there was an episode when Vanessa got into a fist fight at school cause some girls were calling her, "rich girl".
for the longest time I thought Joey was Danny's brother.Actually...the first season of Full House was borderline PG-13. Uncle Jesse said "hell" and "damn" a lot and there was a lot of indications that he was having a lot of sex.
Hence why its still my favorite season.![]()
You're forgetting: Claire don't play.Have you been around married people? Sondra and Elvin were more realistic than Cliff and Claire.
No, he had dyslexia.![]()
She was the only one who was screwed up. It should have been Theo and Denise as the screwed up ones but they fixed Theo by giving him dyslexia.
where the hell is frank costanza!?

That's not so unbelievable
for the longest time I thought Joey was Danny's brother.![]()
They didn't fix Theo. He grew up. Just compare the dumbass of early seasons to the mature, teacher of the later ones.
Nope, the episode of him in high school was on TV Land not too long ago. Becaause of some Icarus test, he took some other test to see if he had dyslexia. And he did.I only remember this coming up in the episode where he was teaching.
Loved Cliff in the Cosby show. It had some unrealistic things but that is what entertainment is for. We all live real life and see negatives. That show chose to focus on as many positives as possible. And you know, I think it could be possible to have high profile careers and marriage and kids if you are really willing to work at it. They Huxtables did work at it. I found it inspirational as did many during the show's run.

I think it was the later HS years, because his parents were in the meeting with the, I guess you can say, guidance counselor who told them about the dyslexia.was it HS? I thought he was in College when they found out.![]()
