This show has to be the best show on tv right now.

"All in the game." -- Traditional West Baltimore

Jumpin' Jesus. That might be the biggest "bump" I've seen yet.

But The Wire is worth it.

Shhhhhhhhhhheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee............

It does. Best tv show I've ever seen.

I've been trying to get into The Wire and The Shield as well.

I didn't watch the shows while they were on and I didn't know they were such popular and well-received shows until they were already over..

Maybe I should use this holiday break to knock out a couple of seasons?

Just watched the first episode, to be honest, didn't do much for me.
I'm sure it will get better later on though.

Give it a few episodes. I starting watching this last year on Direct TV and after episode 3 was hooked, then by the first seasons end I bought the complete series because I couldn't stand waiting week to week for the next episode.

Why so surprised?

The first episode and you're already getting your expectations shot down?

The one thing you always need to remind yourself about pilots or first episodes, is that they are almost never what you should use to gauge the rest of the series or the rest of the entire season on.

Some of my favorite shows of all time had a really bad first season and sometimes they didn't kick into high gear until the second or third seasons...

You can't get into The Wire in one episode its something you need to keep watching and after a couple episodes you will be hooked faster than you can say Proposition Joe!

Well I'd love to get into due to all the praise it gets. It would be easier for me if it was on Netflix Instant. I'll just have to ask around to see who owns it.

I downloaded and watched the entire series a few weeks ago. LOVED IT! Hated seeing Bodie and Omar get it but man was it beautiful. Still dunno if I'd call it the best ever, I think Breaking Bad may take that crown but this was amazing

I thought the third series was the best, the one that concentrated on the kids in high school, seeing who goes bad and whatnot.

The first series was pretty good, the second was not as good, it got a little bogged down, the docks were not as interesting as the inner city, but they are worth watching to get to that third series. Worth watching for Omar, even if you feel like you are getting bogged down in the dense procedure. I didn't, I loved watching all the ins and outs of their work, but I could see how someone else may not take an interest in following something close to real police procedure in surveillance cases.

You're thinking of season 4, that's the one with the schoold kids. I think that's greatest season too but I also love season 2. A lot of people seem to not like it as much because it moves away from the street gangs a bit but I thought it was necessary so as to establish the show as more than just a cop show. Season 2 is about a lot more than dock workers, its about the death of the American working class to a certain degree. I was also really drawn into Frank Sobotka's arc (Chris Bauer was terrific and should have received an Emmy nomination as should have many other actors on the show across its 5 seasons, shame he's pretty much wasted on True Blood) and though their arc moved at slower pace I enjoyed the Barksdale story and felt like this was the season where Stringer Bell came into his own as a truly amazing character (and my favorite on the show).

Such a shame so few people watched this show while it was on, I'm part of the guilty party unfortunately, but at least now its starting to get recognition outside of its original fanbase and the critics for the great show it is. I love quite a few HBO dramas but The Wire puts them all to shame (including The Sopranos, great as that series is).

I love season 3 personally. Big fan of the Stringer/Avon subplot.

Ok, aye, I was not sure if it was s3 or 4 after I said that.
I got the complete series boxset last Christmas and watched them all straight through in a couple of weeks right after, and have lent them out since, so the memory was hazy.
I did like s2 though, it was just a little slow at times.

and my fav HBO series by far is Oz, I only saw the 1st season of the Sopranos, and the final two, well, i tuned back in when Steve Buscemi became a regular, so i saw it from then up til the end. I got the boxset there for Christmas, so when i get time, i am gonna zoom through them all.

I took my advice and I'm going through the show starting from the beginning.

I'm on season 2, episode 2 right now. I think it took me 3 days to finish season 1.

Halfway through season 2...
