Gerard Butler was gave an iconic performance, not sure if it was "good acting" but he certainly had intensity...

Who might have done a better job?

Anyone?

He was perfect, anyone else would have fallen short either physically or performance wise. The ONLY thing that bugged me was the english accents for Greeks, but hey, for some reason hollywood makes any period film when they speak English, it's Engligh english.

Are we sticking with modern actors?

If not, I'd say Gregory Peck, Charlton Heston, and maybe even Alex Guinness would have made an excellent Leonidas. Maybe Sean Connery?

Thhsssish issshh SSSSHHHHHHHPPPPPAAARRRRRTTTTAAAAAA!!!

lol. For some reason I like the Connery idea, but no one could be as good as Butler.

Wwf ultimate warrior
Nah, I’m just kidding!

Butler was greeat
But my favorite was the Persian king
He was soo cool.

Butler is Leonidas

I would even say that the real Leonidas was happy with the result , wherever he is

I don't think anyone could have done a better Leonidas. Maybe Russell Crowe or Mel Gibson might have done as well, but I don't think anyone would have done better than Gerard Butler. He really made the role his own.

I'd like to see what those guys could have done. Outdoing Butler's intensity would be almost impossible but those two might have been able to match him or come close.

I was thinking the same thing. There were a few moments where the accent was really thick and Butler didn't bother to mask it. Especially when Leonidas told the messenger that he'll "find plenty 'a both down there" (reference to Earth and Water) just before he kicked him into the well. What is that? Welsh or Scottish? Anyway, he sounded EXACTLY like Sean Connery.

Scot I believe. Pronunciation after a certain point gets to be a bit regional.

Butler was perfect. Imagine them going hollywood and seeing Brad Pitt as leonidas? Or George clooney? Ugh

Mel Gibson wouldn't have been interested, the film was in English.

haha...

But on a serious note...i highly doubt russell crowe would ahve done it because he wouldn't want to be typecast. And as much as i love 300, it seriously is a poor-man's Gladiator. It would be a huge downgrade for either one.

I'm sure there is someone out there who could have pulled off Leonidas....
But I can't say they would have been able to put as much power behind the performance as Butler does with each and every character he portrays.

many other actors could have played it just as good. but none could play it any better. he was perfect. maybe no one else could have even matched it. he left like he was leonidas. he was really dedicated. he was great.

Gerard Butler is God with a Scottish accent.

well if it was a iconic performance then we arent really supposed to be able to picture anyone else in the role.
