Why do people love doing things that damage the body so much?

Why is it that people drink, smoke, and do drugs, knowing the damage that it does to a person? I've heard of people who have gotten drunk and abused their families, and refused to get help of any sort. I understand that they provide some pleasure to people, but the risk hardly seems worth it. Ex. I've heard alcohol tastes great, and that being drunk is a great feeling, but is it truly worth killing precious brain cells and destroying the liver?

Why do people eat food? They can get fat and die!!

j/k!!

I used to smoke because it made me look cool...

Because we are human.
No human is perfect.

Well, in my honest opinion, I can't stand smoking. Pretty much killing yourself once you start picking the habit up. Same goes with doing drugs.

But I don't mind alcohol. I haven't gotten drunk/really "drank" yet (I'm only 19), but I'm not gonna rule it out ever.

Some people smoke as a "stress relief," etc., but there are actually healthy alternatives. Like chewing gum.

My dad is a smoker, and he wants to quit, but he can't kick the habit. He just can't. And I'm sure it's really too late to actually save his lungs from further damage (he's been smoking for over 25 years, if I am correct). He just doesn't have the will that my mom had. When she found out she was pregnant with me, she quit cold turkey. Pretty damn tough to do that!

Everyone has their vices. In my eyes, smoking is worse than throwing back a beer every now and then. To some, it is a way to cope with what life's dealt them. To others, it makes them feel as if they fit in.

Well, I don't mean drinking every now and then. I mean drinking excessively. Enough to really do serious damage to you.

Oh...okay then. In HS, I'd attribute it to peer pressure.

Only people who have weak judgment give into peer pressure.
They deserve 100% of the blame for doing it.
