Why shouldn't polygamy be legal?

I was inspired to start this thread after watching the news about that FLDS story.

There would have to be some kind of tax adjustments made to accommodate polygamous marriages, and the same rules concerning minors getting married would have to apply.

I have to agree with this, I think some people here just think wives are all fun all the time or something. Imagine hearing "we have to talk" every night from a different wife for a different reason.

Polygamy shouldn't be legal because if a man takes more than one wife, then naturally some women will demand the right to take more than one husband. After that marriages will become more of a web than a coupling, multiple wives and husbands, generating huge families and legal hooks up the wazoo. It just makes things unnecessarily complicated.

If we wanted the right to hold multiple relations at once, then just stay single and practice polyamory. The same basic benefits, only without legal complications.

In all seriousness, I can understand why it's not allowed. If I marry a girl in Philippines, another in China, another in Brazil and etc, etc......and bring them all to the USA, they would kind of feel obligated to do what I say. Can you imaginge porn producers doing that? they'd have like 20 wives from different countries coming here just to do porn and wouldn't give them a dime becuase it's "the man of the households right" or so I heard. I agree, it shouldn't be legal.

I'm a big fan of Big Love and the way they handle the Hendrickson's I really don't see the problem of polgamy that way. If all are consenting adults and they are mentally stable there's really nothing wrong with it.

Makes no sense. If things that cause legal "hassles" should be disallowed, then we shouldn't allow marriage at all...or the starting of businesses and business partnerships, or people getting their work copy-written, or...

Well, it doesn't matter if you understand it. We're not talking about polygamy being made mandatory. We're talking about people who want to do it.

And you say, "It makes things unnecessarily complicated." Well, that's no reason to forbid it.

Do I really have to make a list of all of the things in society that make things unnecessarily complicated that we allow?

If people want to do it, they should be able to, legally.

Laws which explicitly ban any sort of relationship should be stricken from the record. There is no reason why two or more adults of any gender cannot engage in a consensual, loving relationship.
