Columbia Pictures has acquired Empire, a drama that John Logan (Gladiator) will write for Michael Mann to direct and Will Smith to topline, says Variety.

The trade says that Smith is expected to play a contemporary global media mogul.

Smith and James Lassiter's Overbrook Entertainment will produce with Mann's Forward Pass.

Empire puts the director back in the ring with Smith for the first time since Ali. Mann has been working as producer with Smith, Lassiter and Akiva Goldsman on Hancock.

My mistake that is the film Foxx and Mann were supposed to do about a "fixer" for sports stars, I think i got the Kingdom and Empire titles mixed up b/c Mann produced the Kingdom with Foxx in it, this is something new here.

I wonder how Mann is going to fit the Grainy HD Cam into this movie like in Miami Vice and Collateral.

I wasn't too fond of Miami Vice, Collateral on the other hand was great.

I know the Foxx movie is no longer listed on IMDB That storyline does sound like the Foxx one though.

It was, looks like it got canned though, seems Mann and Smith have a project each before this one, Mann is still planning to shoot that Noir thriller with DiCaprio at the start of next year.
