Well here we are less than a year away from SM3 hitting the theaters. My question to all of you is do you think SM3 will get some of these records back? Especially the 3 day weekend total.

yeah, people i know who aren't even close to being die-hard spidey fans are hyped up to see this movie jsut by stumbling across the teaser trailer on line.

It's Gonna Happen Hands Down. If POTC 3 Doesnt Break it 21 Days After...

A lot depends on if there's no other appealing new movie to see
besides the Pirates, the very week it comes out...

that's what vastly helped Pirates 2 accumulate the breath-taking
numbers that it did ...

word of mouth says people enjoyed the 1st Pirate better because it was
new and because of they enjoyed the 1st one so much they looked forward to the 2nd one, which had better special effects but was slower
than the 1st.

i think the what's has to help Spidey 3, i recapture the 3-day opening weekend record is the usual strong marketing over a period, good reviews, huge fan base and the convience of no other new, appealing movies to challenge its box office spot.

i still think it should have planned for a mid June July month when the kids
are out and no other new movie can seriously cut into it's box office total to better add a bigger number total - that's also what i thought helped out Pirates 2's opening day record ( previously held by Star Wars:Sith )

I hope so.

I think Spidey 3 will be a huge film, but I'm not so sure it'll break Pirates' record... Pirates doesn't take itself as serious as Spidey, which helps with kids, and all the adults are familiar with Disneyworld/land and Pirates of the Caribbean, even if they never saw the first one. Spidey will do great, but not quite as well as Pirates.

Plus, Pirates is a stand-alone film that doesn't require knowledge of the first, Spidey really isn't. AND a lot of the dumb "general" audience [<--generalization, so leave it at that] thought Spidey 2 was just boring and not actiony enough.

i agree with a lot of your points.

i thought Spidey 2 had a boring element also with too much over-the top Mary Jane Watson- love element to it but yet ironically that's also the very reason why movie critics deemed it as " the best superhero movie ever " ....... and that probably drew an even bigger viewing audience to it.

to me: the 1st Spidey film had the " perfect" element of both action/romance ingredients and that one was in my opinion the best superhero movie i've ever seen ........ ( the only movie i've ever experienced where the entire audience at the end gave it a standing ovation )

i too, think Spidey 3 will do very well at the box office on May 4th weekend ( definitely in the 100 million mark) but i too also have my doubts if it can break the new record set by Pirates 2.....

I kinda have to disagree here. I think Pirates2 had a lot of elements that required you to see the first one. The marriage, the very end, the characters such as the guy who used to love Elizabeth but joined Jack's crew, and a lot of little things/jokes like the monkey. And Spidey is a pop-culture icon!! Everyone knows who he is, and before pirates1 came out I didn't know that Pirates of the Caribbean was a ride.

I think it will beat POTC2 if there aren't any other big movies around its release like people have been saying. Does anyone know the line up of movies around Spidey 3's release, or is that info not up yet?

Doubt it. It's the third in the series, that works against it. Part 2 didn't achieve the record, so that works against it.

Also, I think it's bizarre to refer to the general audience as "dumb" or "stupid" or "ignorant." That's just unneccessary condescension. I prefer "casual fan" as a term for them.

i say break all records known to box office

Move over Titanic

if this teaser trailer we have here is any indication...yeah...you better believe it will break all sorts of records.

I doubt it will break any major records... Of course it will make more then Superman Returns... But I'm still skeptical, that it will beat P.O.T.C 2's box office record.:spidey:

Hard to say....the box office these days is so volatile....

Still; I'll go out on a limb and say that not only will SM3 set the new status quo, it will also narrowly MAINTAIN it three weeks later when POTC3 opens.

Excelsior!

I hope Spidey 3 Blows POTC 3 out of the water, with a huge opening & will mantian the lead for at least 3 weeks .

Me too, but that's probably not going to happen looking at POTC2's numbers.

POTC is in almost 600 more theatres than Spider-Man was. There are more theatres today than when SM opened.

SM3 will be in more theatres than POTC simply because more theatres will exist in 2007. SM3 has a great chance to beat POTC.
