the closest movie is 700 million behind.

the next billion dollar movie is prob HP7, maybe HP6, but Titanic has close to 2 billion. what could possibly beat it?

Fix that horrible, butt-crammed block of mushy text and numbers and maybe we'll talk.

unless your ******ed, the numbers are bolded...ehh, grow up...

TITANIC 1.845 billion
LOTR3 1.118 billion
POTC2 1.066 billion
HP1 976.5 MILLION
POTC3 960.4 million
HP5 928.8 mil
LOTR2 926.3 mil
SW1 924.3 mil
Shrek 2 919 mil
JP 914 mil

for those who dont understand the point of the topic....wow.

Conisder the competiton Titanic had then. I garantee you if you released Titanic now it would not make that much money. Maybe lesser movies will save the box office and movies in general. The up coming strike may lessen films and big bucks like Titanic will return.

maybe not close to 2 billion, but chances are it would still be the top movie.

Titanic is way overrated in my book. Many movies were better then this. The most money doesn't make it the best movie dude.

yea...but fans are more extreme now then in 96. fangirls particularly.... think, i loved the POTC franchise, but how many fangirls saw any of the 3 multiple times...tons. the common fangirl is a huge factor.

No no movie will beat it. Is it overrated? IMO yes but nevertheless the record stands.

looking a little too much into it...you shouldnt be on the hype if u dont know the top 3 movies and dont get the point of the thread. stupid conflict and pointless... i agree..its hard to read :csad:

Ask your self this if Titanic was Released The Same Weekend as Pirates 2 or 3 or Any Of the Rings movies. Do you think it would have made nearly 2 billion dollars world wide.

That is irrelevant, though. You'd have to factor downloading and the increasing home market.

I would say keep an eye out for the last Harry Potter movie. That is going to be an EVENT MOVIE.

Chill, it's alright.:yay:

To answer your question:

IMO Titanic was the fluke of all flukes. Ask me a few years ago and I would have said that the Star Wars prequels would beat it $$$money-wise$$$ but obviously that didn't happen.

Avatar is a possibility...Cameron might generate enough interest but I highly doubt it...the visuals will be the draw with this one but it won't put asses in the seats like Titanic did.

I dunno...Titanic killed everything for years to come.

I don't think it'll be beaten for a long while. I certainly don't see anything on the radar currently that has a chance at those numbers.

It is sad that even with today's inflated ticket prices no film has even come close to dethroning Titanic.

When talking about the massive success of Titanic we have to remember the NUMBER 1 reason why it did so well .......... subject matter!

The story of the Titanic is almost the stuff of myth/legend but it actually happened, everybody from 8-80 knows the story so right away Cameron had a massive potential audience.
Throw in two young, hot stars and this thing had viewing appeal for just about any sort of movie-goer. Its far from perfect but it became the ultimate 'event' movie.

My wifes Father had not been to the cinema for 30+ years but went to see Titanic .... thats just a small example but it shows the pulling power the movie had, it was still making money MONTHS after release.

Just look at some of the movies that have come out in the last few years, if they can't even come close then nothing will .... I don't think it will be beaten for a long time, if ever.

people nothing will beat titanic. simpy because of technology.
back in 96-97 when titanic was released bootlegging wasnt a super big thing like it is now. Plus going to a movie 10 years ago was alot cheaper than it is now. just the price of a movie now keeps many people away from the threatres. and almost anyone can just download the movie from off the internet for free.
so unless they make it impossible to download movies and the threatres majorly dropped prices. then NO
nothing will ever beat titanic

It will DEFINITELY lose the top spot eventually. With ticket prices continuing to rise it is only a matter of time. Personally, I think 'The Hobbit' could surpass it. It is far greater known worldwide than Lord of the Rings was and IF Jackson does it I think it could claim the top spot.

It'll take a very big iceberg to sink Titanic in the movie stakes, nothing can come close anymore and it seems that movies are generally being aimed at the lucrative PG-13 market, in other words, they're being dumbed down for teenagers thus alienating the audience over the age of 30. Titanic had that audience and it was a hit, so maybe there is an iceberg dead ahead somewhere but it's not in sight just yet

It might happen someday (mostly thanks to higher ticket prices) But whatever movie that eventually might beat Titanic probably will be something unexpected, just like Titanic itself was one hell of a sleeper hit. Or other super blockbusters before it, like E.T. and the first Star Wars. This kind of almost insane success is just impossible to predict.

Avatar won't beat Titanic. Get over yourselves.

A lot of people are guessing that "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" will be very likely to dethrone Titanic when it comes out in 2010. I'd say that's a safe bet. It can't stay up there forever.

By the way, is anyone else surprised that Jurassic Park is still in the top ten? I had no idea it's been toughing it out all these years.
