Summer 2007 presented moviegoers with some of the most spectacular visuals in film history, such as Davey Jones in POTC3, the autobots in Transformers and Sandman in Spider-Man 3.

Can Iron Man deliver in the same manner a year later?

He can fly, shoot lasers and his costume looks cool, but is that enough? Iron Man would have to do something really impressive to stand out. If he doesn't, then he has to rely on the story, and if that isn't spectacular then the movie will fade into obscurity and be only a moderate success, like Fantastic 4.

Obviously Favreau is more trustworthy than Tim Story, but it doesn't really matter if the fans like it. We're satisfied because Tony Stark shows signs of alcoholism, but the general audience will be satisfied by how cool Iron Man looks when he blows up an F-22. I'm afraid that even though the action will be adequate it will be overshadowed by the recent spectacles we've had this year.

Any thoughts?

Based on what we've seen, I think it'll be a visual treat for sure.

Hop into my DeLorean and we can go find out together.

Absolutely.

This movie appears to be done in the same vein as the Spider-man films; comicbook fantasy. A flying suit of high tech armor, high tech weaponry and daring do, combat with another bigger suit of high tech armor.

For this reason (along with a great cast), I really believe if Favreau has made a solid film, IM will do alot better than many believe. It's also the reason I believe IM and TDK won't be to far apart box office wise. IM will be similar to the SM movies (angst, relatable personal drama mixed with huge doses of fantasy....classic Marvel) while Nolan's approach with his film will limit its oveall appeal.

Still, word of mouth will make or break IM.

i think both Dark Knight and Iron Man will have to face a lot of expectations:

A new franchise that COULD carry the 'Spider-Man' mantle of mainstream sucess (IRON MAN).

vs.

A sequel that has to overshadow the first movie, which is a hard feat (Dark Knight)
