Hey everyone, I was going to install either XP or Vista onto my other laptop and wanted to know the number of installs can be used with the Key code that it comes with.

My friend had a copy of XP and I tried to install it but the key code didn't work anymore. He said he thought he had used it eight times but he wasn't sure.

Does this sound right? Does it differ between XP or Vista how many installs you have?

KeyGen's and cracks man. Those two things will get you ANY programs you want.

Lol, I know that but I am curious as to how many installs come with those programs.

One and only one, if you go by the "TOS".

Its more than five i can tell you that and less than 10 :p one of mine ran out recently

Right and Wrong, Microsoft will allow the license to be activated 5x without contacting their customer support. But, just because you can activate it doesn't mean it doen't violate the TOS.

If the OS was store bought (meaning bought seperately from the PC) then you can move it to a different box, but you can't have it on more than one box. If the OS came with the PC (OEM) then it can only be used on that box.

Not saying don't, that's your cal, just a FYI.

I think that's stupid. Just plain dumb. If someone has 5 laptops/desktops they should be allowed to install a copy on all 5 of them.

Again, yes it lets you because you may need to reload a box/computer/machine and to this point it's hit or miss when it comes to activating a key on a different box/computer/machine. So, just because it lets you doesn't mean it's legal. OEM are supposed to be hardware specific, so replacing a motherboard may require you to re-activate your OS. Again, that seems to be hit or miss, depending on patches and service packs.

Not that that should stop anyone.

Agreed.

Agreed.

That makes sense, but still sucks you are not legally allowed to install more copies onto your own computers.
