With Star Trek's success, what comes next?

I'm talking in terms of the genre, not the series. What comes next for the sci-fi genre now that Star Trek has been a success? Could it be like the post Spider-Man era where comic films were greenlit left and right? If so, what do you think will come next? Could we be looking at a theatrical reboot of Battle Star Galactica? Perhaps Stargate will give it another try on the big screen? Could a new series emerge? Or maybe a darker route will be taken. Maybe the long discussed Alien reboot or sequel will finally happen.

My guess is Star Wars is what comes next. Either a remake of Episode IV or a sequel to Return of the Jedi. I've always maintained despite what Lucas said, when the money is green enough he is going to take the franchise back to theaters. With the TV series seemingly stuck in production hell and the animated endeavors being practically unprofitable aside from pseudo anime cartoon network shows (which can't bring in that much), I reckon Lucas will see Trek's success and say "Its time to cash in...I mean tell a part of the story that I will claim that I wrote 30 years ago...I mean that I really did write 30 years ago!"

What do you guys think? Will any effects come of Star Trek? Will nothing happen at all? Or will have Star Trek succeeded in making the sci fi genre (specifically the space opera) viable again?

I really don't think Lucas needs to 'cash in' ....

He has more money than God.

I would LOVE to see some of the original cast return for three more movies set after ROTJ ..... If fat man stays away from the directors seat they could 'save' Star Wars but I'm sure it will never happen.

Never.

I'd like to see some of todays greatest film-makers take a crack at science fiction in film. Sadly, Lucas no longer qualifies as a great film-maker. He's burned out.

Though his plate is pretty full, I'd like to see Guillermo Del Toro take a crack at a sci-fi film.

Good g-d man, lets wait till the second weekend numbers come into play! lol

I think that well reviewed hits always have an effect on what hollywood does so I'd say yes I think that more space based movies will be greenlit.

Such is the plight of the rich, no matter how much they have, they always want more.

It's bad enough that the prequels exist and that the originals have been modified. We don't need remakes of them; they are classics.

I think that many studios will see that A) Reboots still work and keep the trend alive, thus movies like the new Predator will be sped up and B) Dark and gritty isn't the only way to go. Star Trek showed that a light and optimistic future can work despite Lucas' best efforts to kill an optimistic sci-fi movie. I hope some big name directors sign on and maybe give spawn to a new, possibly original franchise. We'll see a ton of sci-fi reboots from this, but I wouldn't mind something like Dead Space become greenlit and adapted to the screen.

As for Lucas and Star Wars, He won't dare completely remake any of his movies, although if he was promised enough money, I know he'd do it. I could see a sequel to Jedi, or an Old Republic movie, but it won't be anytime soon.

Actually.... as long as Lucas has absolutely nothing to do with the remakes. They might be great.

Agreed, but we're fooling ourselves if we think it'll never happen.

I agree. But it would be equally foolish to think it would. There's always that chance that it could, but I think Lucas is smart enough to avoid remaking any of his very few good films.

I'd like to see Spielberg do outerspace. It seems like all his trips into sci-fi are Earth based. I'd like to see a massive, big budget, space opera from Spielberg. Just imagine the possibilities.

Maybe not remake, but I could definitely see sequels.

I've heard he's planning something wit Jonathan Nolan.

That, I'd be okay with. In the right hands, of course. Perhaps based on the Legacy comics.

Plan 9 from Outer Space. Bam.

To be honest, they attempted this back in 97 with Lost in Space, but....gah.

I agree fully. There was Close Encounters and ET, but he's never based any huge film in space. I'd actually love to see what he could come up with.

Considering the Star Wars prequels were huge blockbusters on their own making a lot more than the new Star Trek will make.. why would George Lucas suddenly think, because of the new Star Trek, sequels or remakes of them would make him lots of money? He knows he can make tons of money at ANY time with a new live-action Star Wars.

I'd love to see that get the BSG treatment. Except maybe a bit less grim and gritty.

tell you what i want i want a legend of zelda trilogy

If it were to happen, it would piss off fans so much because they would have to deviate so much. Zelda, while rich in back story, isn't much in terms of narrative. The narrative is a guy in green tights running around caves, dungeons, and whale stomaches all by his lonesome. Not very cinematic. They'd have to change a lot.
