GEORGETOWN, Guyana (AP) - A crowd of Guyanese villagers lynched an elderly woman they accused of being an evil spirit who drinks the blood of human babies, police said Monday.

Authorities in the South American country said the woman raised suspicions with unusual behavior and was set upon by villagers who apparently believed she was an "Old Higue"—the equivalent of a vampire in the local Obeah religion that blends folk magic and African rituals.
The woman, who has not been identified, was beaten to death and her remains were found on Saturday in a village 15 miles east of Georgetown, police said.

Police have arrested three people and are questioning others, Superintendent Balram Persaud said. "We are still investigating," he said. Some expressed surprise at the persistence of belief in Higues, a creature said to take the shape of an old woman who can shrink herself to enter victims' homes through a keyhole.

Well, she won't do that anymore, will she?

burn the witch, burn her!
and then we can eat her
no, seriously, i came early, i am the heart of the angry mob, i want a good slice

If she went down so easily, i guess it's safe to assume she wasn't a vampire?

has anyone seen that monty python movie where they are trying to prove that that girl is a witch and the only way to prove it is to drown her and see if she lives. ha ha. just thought this reminded me of the movie

That was actually the way they used to do it. If you lived you were guilty, and if you died, well, you were going to god anyway, where was the harm?

Witches burn, now what else burns
Wood?
Exactly therefor witches must be made of wood

I guess that is the only way they could find out if she was a shapechanging vampire that fit through keyholes...

You ever hear of the Salem Witch Trials ges681? That's actually what they did, drowning, burning them alive, that was what they did to determine whether people were witches or not.

I am just outside Boston, and very close to Salem. It is an interesting town, especially around Halloween.

Wow. To insight that kind of panic in 2007, even with the level of superstition exhibited in that part of the world is pretty impressive. She must've been one creepy lady.

Don't underestimate the stupidity of people in big groups.

It could be worse. She coulda survived. Imagine how pissed she'd have been then.

It's not the group that amazes me, it's the woman. Think about it. She was killed not because of race, ethnicity or religion. She was killed because people thought she actually drank the blood of human babies.

Props to the scary lady.

Thats a good point actually... I'm willing to bet she was the kind of withered old sackfull of nails that could stop a charging bull by glaring at it. The archetype 'scary old lady'.

Between this and Jonestown, Guyana's not gonna be seeing many tourism dollars for awhile. :o

I just canceled my tickets, my grandmother doesn't sound like she'd fit in there, so we'll have to do something else for her 80th birthday.

Poor grandma. She'll be crushed. :(

Call Sony's Game Division & they will pay for the party & do the planning details :woot: & maybe they will throw in a goat while they are at it

I say mobs should rage against real criminals, not 'supposed ones'...
It's really stupid to lynch someone with no proof! I bet there were killers, rapists and corrupt people in that angry mob and, instead of punishing the guilty people, they punish someone who they didn't even know for sure if she was guilty of anything... FOR SHAME!
