Exclusive: Joel Silver on Wonder Woman
July 22, 2006, Source: Edward Douglas

We've already heard repeatedly from producer Joel Silver that Joss Whedon had turned in an approved script for Wonder Woman, but we never have learned why Silver decided to pursue the rights to the DC Comics character created by William Marston, or why he picked Joss Whedon to direct it, for that matter.

In this exclusive interview with ComingSoon.net/SuperheroHype.com from the San Diego Comic-Con, where Silver was promoting his latest horror thriller The Reaping starring Hilary Swank, we asked him some of those unasked questions.

Why WONDER WOMAN:
"It was after I made The Matrix when I saw the response of the first tests and I realized the Trinity character was the highest-tested character," he told us. "This was before they had done Charlie's Angels or Elektra or any of these movies, and I thought, 'Let's just go out and try to make Wonder Woman work,' and I could never find a script that I liked, but we're close now."

Why JOSS WHEDON:
And what made him think of getting Joss Whedon to write and direct it? "I just thought he would be the perfect guy to write it. I love Buffy and he's a great writer. I sat down with him and asked if he'd do it, and he wrote me a note where he passed, and in the note, he explained what the movie had to be. There was no way I was going to let him pass, so I hammered him until he said, 'Yes.'"

When asked about the general take that Joss took with the movie, Silver explained, "It's the origin story. It has mythology. Steve Trevor crashes on the island and they go back to Man's World."

"We have a script and we know where we're going," he responded when asked about where they are in the casting process. "She'll probably be someone you never saw before, because she's very young, but I think we'll have a good time with it."

The TRIFECTA:
Silver also responded to whether he has any worries about making the movie after the weak box office openings for other movies based on the big DC characters like Batman Begins and Superman Returns. "I love Batman and Superman, I love them both," he said. "I'm just trying to get the best version of the movie that I can. It's the trifecta. Those are the three oaks of DC Comics. I mean, Marvel Comics have tended to be hipper and cooler in many ways because they were designed to react against the DC Comics, but the DC Comics characters were the real deal, so we're trying to get this right."

Source is Coming Soon..Why doesn't SHH have this exclusive?

Also does this mean we'll get a WW forum? ^_^

Glad to hear about the actress, personally I'm tired of all the high end names people have been throwing out.

Taylor Cole! =( But I like the fact that Diana will be really young.

It may draw more kid/teen appeal.

It is an exclusive on SHH, and she does need her own forum now!!

Not yet. We dont even have a date on the film release yet.

That small read by JS sounds exciting.

The "Trifecta" :)

So true..... DC was the original and the real deal!

I agree. When I read that I also got excited. Wonder Woman has to be next big film before any other DC hero is introduced to the big screen.

We dont need a release date for her to get her own forum.

I think she will get one once it is 100% confirmed that the studio is making the movie and that they are casting.

And usually that has a tentative release date attached to it.

Iron Man, like Wonder Woman, has a director and a script in the works. As well as both films being in the middle of beginning the casting process soon. There used to be an Iron Man forum, but that's when the film wasn't even close to where it is now.

After the release date was confirmed officially, he got his own forum. When Wonder Woman has the same, she'll probably get her own aswell.

JOEL SILVER TALKS ABOUT JOSS WHEDON’S WONDER WOMAN

The new horror film THE REAPING starring Hilary Swank and directed by Stephen Hopkins is due out November 8, and producer Joel Silver talked about this highly unusual Dark Castle film at Comic-Con today.

However, conversation quickly turned to another female driven film Silver is guiding – the movie adaptation of WONDER WOMAN by Joss Whedon.

"Joss is getting closer on the script," reveals Silver. "When we have a good script we all like, at that point the studio will agree to make it and we’ll go from there. He’s doing a good job. He’s utilizing the lore of the material and it’s an origin story, so you’re dealing with the origin of the story. He’s a very talented writer and he has a great story and ideas and moving our way toward making the movie and maybe next year we can start talking about the movie here."

For Silver, the biggest challenge of bringing WONDER WOMAN to the screen is finding a movie that works not only for fans, but for mainstream audiences as well.

"It’s finding the kind of movie that will appeal to everyone," says Silver. "It has to work , and it has to have a good character in WONDER WOMAN and be clever and it has to draw you in. Of these three [D.C.] characters. Superman is an alien, Batman is a tough guy and Wonder Woman is a goddess, so you have to work your way through the process."

And while speculation as to who will play the Amazonian goddess has been heating up even before a script is delivered, Silver reveals that there are more benefits to casting an unknown in the lead.

"Probably," he says. "She’s young, I don’t think it can be someone you’ve heard of. Once we have the template of the girl, we’ll be able to find her."

I like that it has an origin and has Steve Trevor. I like the idea of going for an unknown like the original WW Lynda Carter who was also an unknown.

hmm... well isnt Coming Soon = SuperHeroHype anyway? its nota big deal.

Also does this mean we'll get a WW forum? ^_^

should've gotten one a long time ago. but for some reason the Mods wont make one. The Planet over at BlueTights.net has a forum already dedicated for WW, you may want to check that out :)

Glad to hear about the actress, personally I'm tired of all the high end names people have been throwing out.
i think they're gonna go with the Brandon Routh formula: find a total unknown down on her luck and hire her for peanuts.

I checked Hype earlier and it wasn't there...but I went to CS and it was on the front page..

Ahh well..I just thought it was a little odd.

At the time we last asked they commented that they don't make forums unless there is a release date. To cut back on the drop of production..or something.

Hmm..Mmm..;) Where do you think I go for my Wondie kicks? ;)

Anyway I haven't been there for a while since all they talk about is casting. :(

I'm rather glad. I'd rather watch a WW movie without having to worry about a memory of the actress in another movie/show.

Also all the talk about WW has been soley on who they would cast and it's been a little excluding for me since I really don't care anymore. :(

well because of that most of the WW fans have migrated elsewhere and post whatever news and rumours about the production there. nearly everyone who are at the WW BTN forum are SHH regulars. and with the way this production seems to just drag on and on we could probably have the BB sequel out in the theaters and we still wont have a release date.

i actually question a word on that article. its said "Whedon has turned in an approved script". the last we heard about this Whedon did turn in a script but that it kept bouncing back and fourth between him and the producers. there's no word that that version of the script has been approved.

not quite, there are a lot of other topics there now, Pimpernel is doing a great job of Modding the place, its not quite as busy as say the Batman or Superman forums, but its a good place to go to :)

my rule for casting has always been "cast the right person, regardless of their previous work". if you're perfect and you have what it takes to pull it off then that shouldnt stop them from casting you, regardless of what you've done. do you think Johnny Depp would've gotten to play Edward Scissorhands if he allowed people to be blinded by his preppy teen- undercover cop role in the immensely popular 21 Jump Street? see my point? ;)

I think they had Iron Man around since 2004 and they didn't have a release date then (did they?). I want to think that the Hype has a thing against DC females. Notice how they only have Batman and Superman here anyway.

Well I'm glad they're going for an unknown actress for Wonder Woman. It gives me a frakkin' headache seeing all these actresses names pop up. I admit I added a couple but I preferred the unknown route from Day One.

And an Origin Story with Steve Trevor plus alot of Mythology. Nice.

Now if only they pick a release date for this film.....

When is Wonder Woman going to get its own board? Seems to me things are progressing.

Good news to me...

As for the board, I don't know if you guys noticed, but we don't support female heroines. Elektra, Catwoman, Underworld, Ultraviolet all get totally sidelined, their threads falling idle so quickly. What would we talk about on the WW forum? Casting? Again, when we ALL know they're casting an unknown? A WW forum would be deader than... wow...

I tried to do a Steve Trevor Casting thread, and it vaporized... no one wants to talk about the movie, they just want to talk about how 'perfect' the actresss should be... one thread is enough for now...

If we had a WW forum, i'd make stuff up to talk about... i don't care. :)

As for the movies you mentioned, there's a reason they get sidelined. they SUCK! This is Wonder Woman. :) It has to be wonderful.

^So in essence, all female superheroes suck. :p WW may have to be the first one to not suck, hopefully.

...and hence why female superheroine films have been cursed at the box office.

They certainly are being careful about it. Let's hope that this one breaks the curse.

There was a Underworld forum? Im pretty sure that it would be able to keep up its own nowadays.

I was surprised that Pirates never got a forum of its own, you dont really need to be a superhero after all to have one it seems.

Steve Trevor hasn't been a love interest in the past 20 years. He's much older than Diana in the current timeline. For that matter including the invisible jet will only appeal to folks who haven't realized that WW can fly without it.

If movie makers are going to bring up stuff out of the past, then go back to letting Batman carry a gun or drop the bad guys off rooftops. Power down Superman to where he can only jump real high. Put Catwoman back in the purple dress with the little green cape.

In the end, they're gonna do what they want, regardless of what the fans would like to see.

Thats true that Steve Trevor hasnt been the love interest of Wonder Woman in the past 20 years or so, but that might change with the Wonder Woman relaunch that recently took place. Why would I say this? Because apparently Steve has been de-aged as he's actually looking younger than he has in years. Which, I believe, was done for a reason. We'll certainly see.
