Luc Besson insisted on keeping this date. He knew that Valerian won't get IMAX and PLF screens due to Dunkirk releasing at the same time but he stuck to his guns. He didn't budge even when it was apparent that Valerian will bomb. He could have moved the movie to August or September but nah, he doesn't care about the BO revenue.

Translation: He basically shot himself in the foot with that egoistic decision.

Oh dear. I wonder how Wonder Woman will be received in Japan and if its box office might not do so well.

Wonder Woman doesn’t need the kawaii treatment

    http://www.japantimes.co.jp/culture...s-not-happy-kawaii-wonder-woman/#.WYMQgYjytPY

It might end up quite a different movie to what Patty Jenkins produced, and Japanese fans might go in seeing something different and not liking it, thinking that this is what the movie is. But in the first place, they might have misinterpreted what Jenkins was trying to do.

Also, according to a Forbes article from about a month ago (but not by Mendelson) it had the following to say about superhero movies in general in Japan:

'Wonder Woman' Around The World: Where It's Hot, Where It's Not

don't worry, we all know how *****ty the movie marketing in Japan is regardless of the movie so it won't do much harm.

And this doesn't help things in Japan either:

Wonder Woman promoted in Japan with idol song “A Woman Can’t Sleep Alone,” angering some fans

I get the feeling that WW might be promoted as something other than she is in Japan, and then movie-going audiences there won't like what this thing is and could dismiss the movie, not realising that it's the Japanese marketing's own doing and not the movie itself.

I was dreaming of 22 million in Japan. 404 million (DOM) + 396 million (OS) + 22 million (Japan) = 822 million. It'll just about edge the WW total of Spider-Man (2002).

The dream is dead. It's time I bury it. :waa: :waa:

We'll have to see. BvS and Suicide Squad might not have done well there because they weren't good movies, and not because of the characters themselves per se. But then who knows what the Japanese perceive as good movies?

If WW doesn't resonate with their culture, then she might not be well received. But if they were more like sheep and just followed the rest of the world, then they might want to get in on the act of supporting WW because of its status as an event movie. It's difficult to say.

It also depends on how the marketing portrays WW or if it plays up the stereotype that the Japanese audience might not like anyway (or may like - who knows?).

Well not if the Japanese overdubing completely changes the plot or tone of the film like Woody Allen's What's Up, Tiger Lily? where he took a Japanese spy film and dubbed over it and turned it into a search for the world's best egg salad recipe. If the Japanese dub Wonder Woman to conform more to what they think their audiences would like, and then it turns out they don't like that, the movie won't really have spoken for itself. They would only have themselves to blame for that.

Dark Tower is going to bomb. Wind River is going to be a hit but is only in limited release this weekend. WW will hold great. I predict $2.5 million.

Wonder Woman will do fine in Japan. The Japanese numbers for DCEU films are right in line with what most Western superhero flicks do. I don't expect WW to be any different.

After this weekend, Wonder Woman and Spider-Man will both be within sniffing range of 400 million/300 million respectively. Pretty neat.

Well we shall see when the Japanese reviews come out whether they talk about Diana leaving Themyscira in search of egg salad instead of trying to end WWI. :oldrazz:

So 462k on Wednesday for Wonder Woman. A 28.4% drop from last Wednesday and a terrific 18.7% drop from Tuesday. The best drop from it's corresponding preceding Tuesday yet. Very very impressive. I would say even with a 5% drop (I'm being really cautious here), 1.9 million is easily in play spanning the 4 weekdays. Diana flexing her muscles yet again. Show your powers Diana :ww: :ww:

Stop using American perspectives to judge how the movie will do in Japan!

They do stuff differently there, maybe WB is happy some sites are making up controversy to help the awareness of the movie =P

Hopefully, by next Thursday! If wonder woman grosses 300,000 on Monday and 400,000 on Tuesday, then Wednesday will be the day she crosses 400 mill.

PS somebody please check my math to see if I'm right. I'm pretty sure I'm right. However, if somebody else has a different figure, please don't be afraid to post

It will need between 2.8 and 2.9 million starting tomorrow. So it just depends on the exact numbers over the weekend.

From what I can see on the box office mojo site, it looks like WW will have 1307 theaters this weekend. That seems like a pretty phenomenal number for a June release.

By comparison, Finding Dory (June 2016) had 450 theaters in week 10 and Jurassic World (June 2015) had 738.

I meant to add that if Box Office Report's estimation ($2.2m) holds up this weekend and she earns 300k on Monday and 400k on Tuesday, then Wednesday will be the day she crosses the magic number! That is what I calculated at least and I could be off too.

Wow! 1307 on its 10th weekend is incredible. Finding Dory and Jurassic World Grossed way more than her too. Her legs are... mmm mmm good ;)
