Cast your votes in the poll above!

Hopefully this thread will keep going by the end of the decade or even beyond haha!

I really have to wait to see who get's cast as Carol and who the director is. Sort of the same for Diana. We have a star but no announced script writer or director. Snyder is going to produce WW but other than that most everything else is up in the air.

I'm looking forward to both.

But right now, Wonder Woman has the upper hand for being more popular with the general audience.

However, the quality of the film... I don't know.

Captain Marvel seems an easier heroine to 'get right' in a movie. WW is much more tricky. Plus CM being in the MCU already gives here a leg up while WW's sole thing going in her favor is being known more by the G/A. I'd go with Captain Marvel on this one.

I think CM has the advantages of being launched from an already popular and successful mega-franchise, and having a release date just a couple months after the biggest Avengers film yet, essentially positioning it as a sequel to a film that's almost certainly gonna leave people dying to know what happens next. And as kedrell said, it should be easier to "get right," in part because the universe she exists in will be well-established and familiar to audiences by that time.

I personally think a WW movie should be easy to get right as well (using the 2009 animated film as a template and just add in some of the global flavor from Whedon's script), but nothing I've heard about it so far is really giving me confidence in WB's direction for the character. Hope I'm wrong, as I do love WW, but they haven't exactly earned much good faith from me.

Captain Marvel is wayyyyy easier to get right.

I havent read much of either, most of my WW reading has been when she is in Superman stories, which admittedly quite a lot.

CM I more familiar with Mar-Vell, the 1st guy to carry to title, and Phyla-Vell his daughter, but any CM I have read has been in other heroes stories.

So probably WW at the moment, if done right it could be really epic, but the director choices certainly need to improve.

Wonder Woman. Couldn't care less about Captain Marvel. The most interesting thing that ever happened to her was having her powers stolen by Rogue.

Captain Marvel has the advantage of being already in a strongly established Marvel Cinematic Universe (think of all the characters than can lend legitimacy to her film by just appearing in cameo). Wonder Woman was once a cultural icon, but not anymore (pre Justice League, I remember my little cousins who watched Batman and Superman TAS like a religion not knowing who the heck WW was).

WAS? Wonder Woman has to be one of the most recognisable female characters on the planet.

For anybody born in the 1980s or after who doesn't read comic books, and mainly know about superheroes from the cartoons and action figures, there wasn't much WW exposure until the JL cartoon. Definitely from a GA standpoint she doesn't have the same cultural impact of the other 2 on the DC trinity.

Who will perform better? Time will tell.

Diana has the advantage of being more well known, and the potential advantage/disadvantage of going first.

Carol has the advantage of being with Marvel Studios.

Both will likely have HUGE movie tie-ins (BvS: DoJ, Justice League, Infinity War)

Factors TBD:
1. who will star as/direct Captain Marvel? Who will direct Wonder Woman?
2. will the DCCU even succeed?
3. will Captain Marvel fare better or worse if WW fails?

INTRIGUING!

That is the thing with iconic characters they cross genres and interests. I bet any money you could put a picture of Wonder Woman in front of a 5 year old and ask 'who's that?' and they'd be able to tell you.

WW is the superior character, if they do her movie the right way, then she will win no contest

there's a reason why WW is the most popular superheroine

WW is most certainly still a cultural icon, but looking at the box office for MoS and GotG, being a cultural icon is not necessarily enough to be more successful than a lesser-known Marvel property these days, and given the placement of CM's release date, the hype surrounding that one is almost guaranteed to be bigger than GotG's.

Interesting.

Marvel brand v Iconic character.

Which has a stronger pull at this moment in time?

it's hard to predict how things will turn out. DC's status will be VERY different after BVS and Suicide Squad are released

^That's true, but audience reception to BvS will be the true deciding factor, imo. I don't think Suicide Squad will have much sway on the public's perception of the DCCU one way or the other.

Agreed. It will be BvS that will sway the general audience with regards to WW. I don't think Suicide Squad comes into the equation.

Wonder Woman and Gal Gadot interest me a lot, thus I voted accordingly.

Dunno if you've been following the recent rumors, but Suicide Squad is apparently going to have a big impact on the DCU. Lex Luthor is possibly returning, and Harley Quinn may be introduced. There's speculation that the movie will feature Black Manta, Deathstroke, Deadshot, and Amanda Waller in addition to Quinn and Luthor.

I think Suicide Squad is going to establish a lot of the darker side of the DC universe, i think we're going to see some very familiar faces in this movie.

I think SS will have a big impact on the public's perception of DC. DC has amazing villains, arguably better villains than the villains that Marvel has the film rights to. Suicide Squad can really set DC apart from Marvel because so far, the emphasis hasn't really been placed on the villains in the MCU (aside from Loki).

I still have strong reservations about the casting of Gal Gadot, but I'll just have to get over it.

Really though, WW vs CM ? How many Captain Marvels have there been now ? WW easily wins this one. It would be tough to find any of Marvel, or anyone else's comic book female characters with the same kind of status as WW.

And, growing up in the 70's I can tell you that Lynda Carter did a lot for Wonder Woman - ridiculous as the show was.

As always though, just IMO.
