Wong Takes on Dragon Ball Z
Source: CHUD
October 2, 2007

CHUD has learned from a casting notice that James Wong ("Final Destination" films, The One, "The X-Files") is writing and directing the live action Dragon Ball Z movie for 20th Century Fox. The site has included the casting breakdown, which you can read here.

Dragon Ball Z is adapted from the manga created by Akira Toriyama; the work was also turned into a Japanese anime series that played all over the world. It tells the story of an alien sent to destroy Earth, who has a change of heart and decides to join the humans in their fight against various aliens and bad guys.

The film is expected to start production in Montreal in November.

Just when I was beginning to lose hope...a little more info trickles down like candy coated rain
drops.

Although if you follow the link it sounds more like Dragonball than Dragonball Z the dude is writing I don't see anything about Raditz or Vegeta. That really sucks if they use that script cause I wanna see the Saiyan Saga, not DBZ.

And since when is Goku an unpopular kid at school? I'm pretty sure he never went to school. Which is part of his charm.

"Gohan is struck down by the high ninjas of the Namek-Jins, and as he dies he sends his grandson out to do face his destiny and do battle against them..."

^^^

WTF is that about?! I don't need a scouter to sense a dark power approaching...

[GOKU] 18 years old, Goku is considered uncool and unpopular at school, but he is in fact an extremely talented martial arts fighter who gets rigorous training from his grandfather, Gohan. After the death of his grandfather by the evil Lord Piccolo, Goku finds his destiny in his grandfather's dying request that he find Master Roshi and gather all seven Dragon Balls (of which he has one) in order to prevent Piccolo from succeeding in his desire to use the dragonballs to take over the world. Trained by Master Roshi, aided by Bulma and Yamcha, friends he meets along the way, Goku proves himself a formidable, almost undefeatable fighter. On many dangerous adventures to find the remaining Dragon Balls and thus save the world, Goku conquers physical and emotional challenges, ultimately saving the world but clearly impelled to spend his life searching for the Dragon Balls with his trusty companions...LEAD

[BULMA] 20s, female, pretty, with great intelligence behind her gleaming eyes, Bulma is a determined, competitive young woman whose father's five star Dragon Ball was stolen by Lord Piccolo, and who believes that she can harness their unlimited energy and change the world like Edison or Einstein. Bulma, who has a DBE (a Dragon Ball locator device), teams up with Goku, and with him meets up with Master Roshi and Yamcha as they attempt to collect the missing Dragon Balls before Piccolo can destroy the world. A resourceful and courageous young woman who's also a weapons expert, she overcomes many obstacles with her colleagues, only to find the seven Dragon Balls ultimately snatched from their grasp--but it's clear she's going to continue searching for them with Goku and Yamcha...LEAD

[YAMCHA] 20s, "the bad boy who has no trouble attracting women," he taunts Goku, Bulma and Master Yoshi, who are trapped in a sand cave, rather than helping them with his rope ladder. However, after overhearing Master Roshi's tale of Piccolo once nearly destroyed the Earth and are preparing to do so again, Yamcha has a change of heart and not only helps the three in the desert, but becomes a valuable part of the team. An ingenious young man whose utililty truck is the Swiss Army Knife of trucks--every tool and gear imaginable sprouts from its body--Yamcha joins Goku, Bulma (with whom he becomes romantically involved) and Master Yoshi on their quest to find the seven Dragon Balls before Piccolo...LEAD

[MASTER ROSHI] This older man is a good friend of Goku's grandfather, Gohan, and Goku comes to enlist his help after his grandfather is killed. Although he looks like a beggar, Roshi is one of the world’s most fearsome fighters. Master Roshi begins Goku's rigorous training to prepare him for the adventure of finding and fighting for the seven Dragon Balls to save the world from Piccolo's destructive plan. A wise, somewhat wry man who knows as much about human nature as he does about martial arts, Master Roshi is impressed with Goku's fighting but reminds him of his failings as well. Ultimately, Master Roshi sacrifices his own life in order to destroy Piccolo...LEAD

[MAI] Late 20s, female, her features exotic, sexy but deadly, dressed in gleaming black, with weapons strapped all over her body, she's a martial arts expert and Lord Piccolo's chief enforcer. Crafty and quick thinking, Mai uses her ability to shapeshift near the climax of the movie and takes on the form of Chi Chi, a young martial arts expert who's romantically involved with Goku and later saves Piccolo from Master Roshi's curse; once she is revealed she ends up in the fight of her life.

[LORD PICCOLO] An ancient being who despite his humanoid appearance, is from an alien race determined to take over the world. Piccolo is the cursed ruler of a demonic race who nearly destroyed Earth 2000 years ago, and with the coming of the eclipse and the possession of all seven Dragon Balls, he's prepared to free himself and do the job right this time. Crafty and smart, Piccolo has some disturbing news for Goku, namely that the boy is actually a Saiyan who's destined to join Piccolo as his right hand in destroying and enslaving the planet...LEAD

[CHI CHI] Goku’s lifelong love interest, Chi Chi is an attractive, tom boy-ish young woman who has grown up with Goku. She has studied martial arts and has always suspected that Goku possesses talents that are unusual and extraordinary. After Goku embarks on his journey to redeem his grandfather’s death, Chi Chi meets up with Goku and his crew at a tournament of champions where their mutual attraction finally heats up during a training session.

[GOHAN] Goku's kindly, wise grandfather, he looks like he's in his 70s but moves like Jet Li. An accomplished martial artist who trains Goku on the bow staff, he loves his grandson and is happy to prepare a special feast for him on his 18th birthday, as well as a special gift: a 3 star Dragon Ball. Tragically, Gohan is struck down by the high ninjas of the Namek-Jins, and as he dies he sends his grandson out to do face his destiny and do battle against them...

Ahahaha, this movie is going to suck massive penis.

Wait....what did I just read because that better not be a serious attempt at a DB or DBZ movie. This movie will be an epic fail if thats what its like.

I sincerely hope not.

I was filled with hope until I read the above ideas. Those suck. Namek ninjas? WTF is that about? They need to just go ahead and film that Ben Ramsey script that mix DB with DBZ.

The Below is very old, but I still think that it would make a great live action DB movie.

The movie starts off on the Saiyan's home planet. Bardock sends his son out into space along with several other Saiyan babies in their separate pods, all heading towards a different planet. Shortly after being launched they are all blasted into dust and only Goku's (or Kakorot's) pod escapes and soon after crashes on Earth. He lands near a Buddhist Temple where he is raised to be a kindhearted boy by all of the monks. Years pass and the monks are unable to find an outlet for Goku's inhuman strength so they send him off to train with and old martial arts master, Master Roshi. There he meets Krillan and they become good friends. Roshi teaches them to use energy as a weapon (energy blasts) and all seems well until one night when Goku sees the full moon and transforms into a giant monkey, or Oozaru. Goku goes about his rampage until Krillan blasts his tail off and he returns to normal.

During that same time another alien ship crashes on Earth. This time it's Piccolo and he's carrying the Dragonballs with him. Now at this point Piccolo is one bad mofo and his only desire is to conquer Earth. By doing so he hunts down the strongest fighters on the planet and kills them, but little does he know the two strongest fighters are kids. Piccolo causes a good bit of damage that attracts the media and once Goku and Krillan get wind of it they head off to face him against Master Rosh’s wishes. A huge battle takes place between the three fighters and at the end Krillan jumps in front of a blast to save Goku's life and dies. Goku freaks out; his tail grows back, transforms into the Oozaru again, and nearly kills Piccolo. But Piccolo finds out his tail is his weakness and he cuts it off, returning Goku back to normal. Goku is out cold and it looks like Piccolo will take the win. But Roshi shows up and stops Piccolo from killing Goku. Roshi is ready to hand Piccolo's ass to him but he lets him go in exchange for knowledge of the Dragonballs. Once Goku awakes Master Roshi explains to him what happened and he decides to find all the Dragonballs to wish Krillan back to life.
Unfortunately Master Roshi lives like a hermit and has very little money and resources to do such a thing. It would end right there but luckily Roshi is friends with billionaire scientist and owner of Capsule Corp., Dr. Brief. Brief decides to finance their adventure and soon enough they, along with the daughter of Dr. Brief, Bulma, are on their way across the world to find the Dragonballs. They are all eventually found and the eternal dragon Shenlong is summoned to grant their wish. Krillan is revived.
10 years pass and Goku is now married to Chichi and has a 7 year old son, Gohan. Goku and Krillan have signed up to compete in The World Martial Arts Tournament. Once they arrive at the tournament they see that Bulma has signed up too. As the tournament begins and progresses the only fighters left in the final rounds are Goku, Krillan, Bulma, Yamcha, Tien, and a mystery fighter. As the final rounds are about to begin five pods crash into the stadium. In them are Raditz and four other Saiyans. Raditz tells his brother of his past and what he is. A huge brawl between the tournament fighters and the Saiyans begin. All of the Saiyans are killed in the fight except for Raditz who snatches Gohan and flies off with him. Goku and the mystery fighter chase him down into a barren desert land. The mystery fighter reveals himself to be Piccolo. A battle between the three insures until Piccolo finishes off Raditz but not without killing Goku in the process. As Goku lay on the ground dying Piccolo promises him that he will find the Dragonballs and wish him back so they can have their rematch. Raditz transmits this to Freiza's mother ship and tells Piccolo that his team mates are coming and will destroy Earth. Piccolo is major pissed off and blows Raditz away (cool). Once the rest of the gang discovers what happened, Krillan, Yamcha, and Tien begin their training with Master Roshi and another martial arts master, Mr. Popo. (Don't ask me how they came up with that one.) And Goku trains with Kai (aka: King Kai) in the afterlife. Meanwhile Piccolo takes Gohan with him in order to train him. He believes that Gohan could be the strongest one of them all.

Back at the mother ship Vegeta and Nappa are ordered to go to Earth and retrieve Kakorot and the Dragonballs. It takes two years for them to reach Earth and during that time everything pretty much happens the same way it did on the show. Everyone has grown much stronger, especially Gohan. The Dragonballs are gathered and used to bring Goku back to life. However it was too late because the Saiyans have already reached Earth and Goku must run through Snake Way before he can join his friends. The big battle starts and Yamcha, Tien, and Piccolo are all killed by Nappa. Goku finally arrives and quickly disposes of Nappa. Before he goes one on one with Vegeta he tells Gohan and Krillan to leave. They do as he says and the classic battle begins. Goku vs. Vegeta. Once Vegeta finds that Goku is too much for him to handle he transforms into an Oozaru and nearly kills him. But Krillan and Gohan are back at ground zero and once Gohan transforms as well it's an all out giant monkey brawl between Gohan and Vegeta (cool again). Vegeta rips off Gohan's tail and Krillan blasts off Vegeta's tail. They both return to normal and Krillan gives Goku the Sensu Beans. Goku is now back to his full strength but Gohan is badly injured. Vegeta tricks Goku into thinking he killed his son. Goku goes mad with rage and shows hints of something much greater than an Oozaru. And then it might have something like to be continued or something like that. You will just have to wait and see...

Wow. :down

That plot breakdown is horrible...
It may be too soon to say, but if this is a sign of how the film will be, it can go straight back to development hell to rot for many years to come.

so... they pretty much fused Oolong, Yamcha and the capsules into a new Yamcha and gave Lunch's killer instincts to Bulma and replaced Oolong's spot with Master Roshi.....

They also fused Pilaf with Piccoro, added Mai and turned Shu into MULTIPLE underlings... also giving Mai the transformation techinque

Quite better than introducing the whole Saiyan arc, but still seems horrible

As a fan of this terrific series, i never doubted that making a Dragon Ball movie first would of been a smart direction to take before tackling Dragon Ball Z. I also thought they could instead make a prequel out of DBZ. So far what i've learn't about this movie, only reflects how poor fox is with its choices when making Big budget adaptions. They hired a guy who's done a short string of poor to average quality Films. And the character descriptions, is by far the most insulting thing i've read, they barely relate to their original counterparts, the age isnt a problem but the whole concept of making it more relatable to the audience by having Goku going to school and all this other silly crap is just pathetic on Fox's part!

So it is a bastardized version of Dragon Ball and not DBZ where Goku is an 18 year-old Spidey knock off fighting a human looking Piccolo. No mention of Gohan, the Sayin saga (in retrospect the best saga as it was the most original while all the following ones were variations on it), Vegeta Nappa or Goku's older brother that comes and kills him.

Y'know a trilogy could have worked. The first being a streamlined Sayin Saga, the second being the Freeza/Namok Saga and the last being the Cell Saga. But this sounds really bad. Oh well.

That's why I always was against a DBZ Movie from the very beginning. I knew they'd bastarize it like there's no tomorrow.

I want my dumb as a brick, midget Goku that has never seen a girl before and needs to touch people on their funny parts to tell their gender. :o Either that or don't even make an introduction Movie and just start at the beginning of the Saiyan Saga.

Guys, guys ! :o

I'm scared to death by what I've been reading ! Wong and Montreal were bad enough already !

The adaption of DBZ would demand something closer to the Lotr adaptation work.

Dammit, and I had already a hard time pretending Resident Evil never got made as films...

eh... could be a hit, and then again could be a miss...

keep in mind they're making this for the general audience, and not the fans

True, but we didn't really see any of our major comic book superheroes suffer from drastic mischaracterization in their respective films.

It wont be a hit :( the character treatment is the worst i've read for any adaption. I mean that alone won't help make the film the story will too, And yes, The saiyan saga is the best saga their has ever been, every series never topped it, but they definetly had moments that can be considered the greatest moments in Z such as Goku becoming a super saiyan, one of the best moments ever i reckon :D Cell saga had a few buu saga as well but not nearly as good, Vegeto and Mystic Gohan were the only two really awesome things in that saga.

Have you seen X-Men?

The changes there are no different then these.

Damn this sucks. Not only that it's being directed by James Wong, I mean did anyone see Final Destination 3? ****, both Final Destination movies he did were terrible. The One sucked hard. Damn, this sucks.

Not that DBZ is a great show in the first place. It's quite stupid and boring at times.

But honestly, this sounds like Dragon Ball. Not Dragon Ball Z. To call it Dragon Ball Z is pretty stupid.

I'm sure Tom Rothman will love it.

eh... could be a hit, and then again could be a miss...

Why do Studios always think they have to change things to make it work for the general audience? Dragon Ball became a world wide phenomenon for a reason. If its concept didn't work, it wouldn't have been popular in the first place.

Only a few things need to be changed if necessary. Like making Roshi less perverted and not showing any naked parts. Otherwise this needs to stay a giant fantasy story that is based on the Monkey King. I don't want a story about an unpopular highschooler that fights against an army of Namekian Ninjas.

I honestly feel that Dragon Ball and DBZ are unfilmable as live action movies.

Also, there's been a live action Dragon Ball movie before.

Merging King Piccolo with Raditz. Lame :down

^^^^

Quite Lame indeed, my friend.

They need to get the dude who wrote Wolverine David Benioff to write it.

Have you seen X-Men?

The changes there are no different then these.

X-men's had some pretty big changes, but i mean its x-men, it was easy for them to do it with that series because theirs so many stories and so many characters and universes. Dragon Ball z focus's on a hand full of characters and the stories are very closely bonded that in the case of this movie, if it goes through, then i doubt we'll be seeing Raditz if piccolo will be the one to spill the news, how he'll know will be beyond me. And it wil also destroy the best kept secret that launched the series. How are they going to bring Vegeta and Nappa in too they came after they learn of the dragon balls through Raditz, but i doubt piccolo will be working in conjunction with them and wearing a scouter so they'll have some other stupid plot twist.

Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z had a long run. But yes, it's a singular story and very continuous. That still doesn't mean it's translatable to live action.
