World War II....a war fought for a good reason.....to save lives. I've always enjoyed movies about it. I've seen a lot of them over the years. This will be a thread for discussing them.

Yesterday I watched -

MURPHY'S WAR. (1971) Directed by Peter Yates. Starring Peter O'Toole, Sian Phillips, Philippe Noiret, and Horst Janson.

At the end of WWII, up a river in Venezuela.....a German U-boat torpedoes and then slaughters all survivors of a small British ship.....except they miss one....crewman Murphy (O'Toole) manages to swim away and is picket up by Louie Brezan (Philippe Noiret), a French "Jack of all trades", on his river dredger, who takes him to the small clinic ran by Dr. Hayden (Sian Philips). He tells her he was torpedoed by a U-boat, but she doesn't believe him because she say a submarine can't make it this far up river. When he tells Louie the same thing, he says it is possible because he has been dredging the river to make it easier for boats to navigate the river. Shortly later, locals bring in another wounded member of the British ship, airman Ellis (John Hallam), who had been in his amphibias bi-plane when the ship was attacked, and was subsequently shot down by the gunners on the sub. Murphy and Louie go in search of the plane while Dr. Hayden radios authorities that there is a sub in the river and that she has a wounded sailor with her. Unfortunately the Sub hears the radio report.

While Murphy searches for and finds the downed bi-plane, the sub shows up at the village clinic and the crew hunts down Ellis. The Captain, Lauchs (Horst Janson), personally shoots and kills the wounded airman. Murphy and Louie tow the plane back to the village, and when he finds out about the murder of the airman he vows revenge upon them. He repairs the plane, rigs up a couple of large Molotav cocktails, while Dr. Hayden tries to talk him out of it, saying if he doesn't succeed the Nazis will retaliate against them. Murphy flies off in search of the sub. He finds it hidden close to the river bank and proceeds to bomb it. He flies back to the clinic, and he and Louie start celebrating the sinking of the sub. But it's not been sunk....and it comes down the river and using the cannon and large machine guns mounted on it's deck, it blows up the plane and shoots up the village killing many innocent people.

Murphy talks Louie into letting him take his dredger in search of the sub. As they prepare to leave, they hear on the radio that the war with Germany is over. Dr, Hayden tries to stop them, saying there is no need for this since the war is over....but Murphy has vengeance on his mind. They continue on and find it on the surface of the river....and slowly head for it. The sub opens fire on the dredger with the deck machine guns, but it keeps coming, so they fire a torpedo at it. Murphy manages to avoid the torpedo, the sub dives, and Murphy tries to ram it but it goes under before he can hit it. Murphy notices the river being churned up in one area and surmises that the sub is stuck on the bottom. He then remembers the torpedo, that was shot at but missed, them.

He finds the torpedo....and using to crane on the multi purpose dredger, hauls it up. When he tells Louie he intends on dropping it on the sub, Louie leaves saying it is too dangerous and crazy. Murphy goes to where the sub is stuck and drops the torpedo on it. The explosion rips the sub apart....but it also cracks the old dredger in two. A piece of the ship falls on Murphy pinning him to the deck. As he shouts "I got you, you S.O.B." he sinks with the ship. The end.

Director Peter Yates also directed - BULLITT, BREAKING AWAY, KRULL and THE DEEP.

Peter O'Toole also starred in - LAWRENCE OF ARABIA, THE STUNT MAN, MAN OF LA MANCHA, and THE LAST EMPEROR.

Sian Philips also starred in - DUNE, I CLAUDIUS, CLASH OF THE TITANS, and VALMONT.

Philippe Noiret also starred in - CINEMA PARADISO, THE NIGHT OF THE GENERALS, and TOPAZ.

Horst Janson also starred in - CAPTAIN KRONOS-VAMPIRE HUNTER, THE MCKENZIE BREAK, and SHOUT AT THE DEVIL.

Trivia - Peter O'Toole and Sian Philips were married for 20 years and had two kids together.

World War II is such a great source of many classic films. So much so that there are even different sub-genres of World War II flicks. I'm personally partial to the classic old-school battle epic. These are the films that are less about the characters and more about the events and their scale and impact. The Longest Day, Tora, Tora, Tora, A Bridge Too Far, The Battle of Britain, Dunkirk, etc. are some of my favorite movies and we really don't see that sort of thing very often anymore.

On June 6th I watched for the umpteenth time -

THE LONGEST DAY (1962) Directed by Ken Annakin, Andrew Marton, Bernhard Wicki, Gerd Oswald, and Darryl F. Zanuck.
Starring John Wayne, Henry Fonda, Richard Burton, Gert Frobe, Sean Connery, Eddie Albert, Curd Jurgens, Peter Lawford, Chritian Marquand, and many many more.

Based on events that happened on D-Day, June the 6th 1944. Author Cornelias Ryan painstakingly researched the day and wrote the book that this movie uses as a guideline. It is the best movie made about the allied invasion of France to kick the Nazis out. It shows things that happened from the American, British, French, and German perspectives. It uses dozens of big name actors from all the countries involved and thousands of extras. It uses American, English, French, and German directors to film each respective country's parts.

The movie portrays events both heroic and comical, dramatic and poignant that happened to the participants. I highly recommend it....not just because it's a good movie, but because it is a very good history lesson. It could (and should) be used in schools in their history lessons.

For a super depressing WW2 movie double feature that aren't from the American perspective. I recommend Come and See, and Grave of the Fireflies. Both movies take place during WW2 and have kids as the main characters. One is live action and one is animated.

One of the more underrated patriotic moments in these films is when Henry Fonda's Theodore Roosevelt is the first to step ashore on the beach, despite the fact that he can barely walk by that point. It never fails to get my heart pumping and is my favorite scene in the movie. Even better is that it actually happened in real life.

Not all of these are necessarily well-reviewed, but I enjoyed them nonetheless and have some of them in my BD/DVD collection. Roughly in order of how I'd rank them, with the best at the top:

Schindler's List
Saving Private Ryan
Dunkirk (2017)
Hacksaw Ridge
Anthropoid
The Imitation Game
Defiance
Enemy at the Gates
Fury
Valkryie
U-571

I don't think I've watched any WW2 movies made before the 90s. :o

Although it's not focused on American soldiers, Letters From Iwo Jima is a fantastic film directed by Clint Eastwood.

I've read about COME AND SEE but haven't had a chance to see it yet. I saw GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES around 20 years ago. I think I still have it on tape somewhere....need to watch it again.

That's a cool scene.....but my favorite scene is the French attack on the Nazis in the casino. The long, choreographed, one-shot from the air, dozens of actors as soldiers being shot and blown up is spectacular.

I have all but ANTHROPOID in my collection....and I really want to watch it. I've seen hundreds of WWII movies, and of course most were made before the 90's. I encourage you to try some.

Yes, it's a fantastic movie. It's the type of movie that the average American should see. It shows that the enemy can still be human beings.

My Dad had me watch Das Boot with him when I was really young to educate me a bit on that same thing. People forget or don't stop and realize that not all Germans who fought in WWII agreed with Hitler about the Jews and were Nazis. A lot of them were already enlisted and just serving their country. When you realize that, Das Boot is a sad movie by film's end.

It isn't the greatest movie (although certainly not bad), but To Hell and Back is an interesting watch if only for the novelty of seeing Audie Murphy play himself in his own biography.

Much of the German military hated Hitler's guts. But when your entire family might be brutally murdered if you don't do what he says, that's a powerful motivator. Many defied him anyways.

It's a good movie....it's not as gritty or graphic like a movie made today, but that's just because of the time it was made. There were so many restrictions then on what could be said or shown. It's interesting to think that so many movies put a big muscle bound guy in the hero role....when it real life, it was a little guy like Audie Murphy that was tough as nails. I've watched it a dozen times. I would love to see a modern day version that showed his heroics during the war, but also showed how he suffered from PTSD for the rest of his life.

I watched this a week or so ago -

A BRIDGE TOO FAR (1977) Directed by Richard Attenborough. Starring Sean Connery, Dirk Bogarde, James Caan, Robert Redford, Michael Caine, Gene Hackman, Anthony Hopkins, and many more.

A telling of OPERATION MARKET GARDEN....a real event a few months after D-DAY. A hastily devised plan for a major allied push through Holland and into the heart of Germany. The purpose was to capture multiple bridges allowing easy access into the Rhineland. The movie doesn't white wash anything,,,,,it shows the good and bad things done by both sides. The opertion was both a success and a failier. Although they didn't succeed in crossing into the Rhineland....they did manage to liberate a lot of Holland. The movie uses some of the biggest names in acting at that time and thousands of extras. It has epic scenes like the paratroop drop using thousands of parachuting soldiers....scores of tanks on the move and in battle....and the destruction of the town of Arnehm in trying to take the final bridge.
