I cannot believe that The Wire was not nominated for one single Emmy. Who votes for these nominations, anyway? It's a shame that the best television series was ignored once again. And for what? but what pisses me off more so is that The Sopranos, in a weak-ass final season (last 2 years weak as hell, for that matter), gets 15 F'n nominations! Gimme a friggin' break. I just don't get how one of the best reviewed shows gets no consideration at any of these award shows. It's not like it's an underground secret or anything - every major publication has given it rave reviews, many repeatedly proclaiming it the best show on TV.

I watched the first season of the Wire recently and its a good show, but it isn't a GREAT show like Sopranos, The Shield, etc. I honestly expected more of the show as it was a bit on the boring side at times. The characters just don't really do it for me and they don't stand out like the characters from the other shows I mentioned.

Season 3-4 are the best! I watched the Sopranos and Shield and they are great shows! But imo it doenst hold a candle to The Wire. Thats how it is in the hood! Its sooo grity and real! I guess its hard for people to understand if they havent been in the hood. Probably why it isnt as big as a hit like other crime drama shows The Sorpanos and The Shield. As for character wise, I think it has a great variety of Character! More than any other show I ever seen! I mean you see Cop who drinks himself to death while still trying to do his job and doenst let anything get away with what he wants even betraying himself and his friends. Omar my fav character!!! The most ambitious character I ever seen in TV! The dude robs from Drug Dealers!!! MY god sooo real! I knew couple cats like that growing up, never I thought they would ever put something like in TV! You also The Avon/Stringer Relationship!!! One more like a Soldier, the other more like Businnes Man! Some of the best Gangsters I ever seen in TV! Ranks up there with The Godfather!. Lets not forget about the life lessons learned in watching the Wire!!! It makes you feel what some of these kids go there, especially if you watch Season 4! My heart ache how Michael Pretty much sold his soul to the Devil to saves his young brothers life!!! Really its Boyz In Da Hood come to life! Hopefully someday this show will the respect and recoginition it deserves because it is truly an amazing show!

The Wire isn't that great. And saying that a person who doesn't like it hasn't been to the hood is a crap excuse for defending this show.

I think the Wire is the best show on t.v. and probably the most realistic.

The thing about The Wire is that you're really seeing things from every possible angle; The cops, the criminals, the politicians, and the people caught in the middle. It's not a matter of favoring any particular group of characters. As great as the Shield is, you're only meant to focus and root for one group. Same with the Sopranos. There are a lot of terchiary players you couldn't give a rat's ass about, whereas The Wire, in my opinion, everyone's on equal footing. Every character is treated like a primary character that you're meant to connect with and at least get a basic understanding of their logic. Seasons three and four were great especially when it came to Lt. Conclin.

Given the shows that were nominated, The Wire definitely deserved something.

Tell me about it. I respect LA's opinion but when someone says something like that, its hard to.As far as The Wire vs. The Shield, I remember a while back renting The Shield from Blockbuster as I was curious about it. Never saw an ep but heard nothing but good things. I watched the whole first disc and went back to Blockbuster that night, halfway drunk, and rented more discs. The show hooked me and blew me away right off the bat. Now I've only seen the first season of The Wire and some of the second, but The Wire has not at all blown me away like The Shield. McNulty is the really only cool dude, but Vic Mackey blows him away in character and acting a million times over. And I like the other characters in The Shield one way or the other. I find most of the secondary and/or peripheral characters rather dull and unexciting. I do like the Omar character, like LA does, as he is one bad mother ****er. And some of his scenes are the best of what I've seen. And while The Wire does give us two sides, that doesn't necessarily make it more exciting or dynamic. It certainly is interesting to see both sides, but I don't get the same sense of grit as I do with The Shield. I feel The Shield gives us a better sense of the streets and the city, and while it may not dig as deep into those as The Wire, I feel the world in The Shield is more...alive for lack of a better word. I haven't given up on The Wire. Maybe it takes longer for that show to stick with me...I don't know. I'm going to Netflix all the seasons. But for now, give me The Shield anyday.
** sorry about the lack of paragraphs. This crap computer at work completely ignored my paragraphs and made it into a big wall o' text.

**** the Wire (no offense it is a good show) but WHERE THE **** IS ROME!!!!!! Not really. But seriously, **** The Sopranos. The last two seasons sucked.

That show was one brilliant episode after another in its second (and last) season with maybe one dud out of like 12. THAT IS HOW YOU END A SERIES DAVID CHASE.

Why?
