X-Files 2 question

Without spoiling it does it pick up after the first movie or the last episiode of the tv show or does it stand on its own?

I realize that there is an x-files 2 thread but obviously I dont want to see any spoilers seeing as its already been out for awhile and Ive yet to see it. Im just looking for a simple answer to my question.
