Dark Phoenix X-Men Dark Phoenix SPOILER Discussion

Something that surprised me was that they did very little to embrace the time period like First Class, DOFP and Apocalypse besides maybe the hairstyles of Jean and Storm. Hell, even Dazzler's song sounded like modern pop. The decade time jumps between films made sense in the past but was there a reason why this had to take place in 1992 and not sooner after the events of Apocalypse? And why was JFK shown on TV in First Class, Richard Nixon depicted as an actual character in DOFP, Reagan shown on TV in Apocalypse, but George Bush wasn't the President in this one?

Ah well. I guess I'd rather that than have to endure another forced Quicksilver scene set to "Smells Like Teen Spirit". :o

It was only to have the first launch of the Endeavor in there. That was it.

I don’t know if anyone’s mentioned it, but Mystique’s death was very similar to a certain injury Wolverine gave her in the first movie... you know, the one that she survived. :o

Another thing that bugged me about mystique's death is that she's supposed to have regeneration abilities so that pitchfork or wood or whatever shouldn't have been a mortal wound, her cellular structure is supposed to handle that. But whatever.
They should have went with the head :o.

Here’s my breakdown.

-Opening was the same up until they got back to the mansion after the space mission. There was about maybe a minute more of Scott and Jean in their living area. Nothing too major but it helped flesh-out out their relationship more.
-There was a bit more of Raven and Hank in the sub basement, with Hank clarifying that raven wants to run away with him, together, to start a new life together. I heard there was another scene also diving a bit more into their relationship but I didn’t see that.
-It also showed them running upstairs and through the school to the door to the grounds. The shockwave blows the door open and after their look of initial shock, they are sent flying back and hit a wall on the opposite end and fall on top of each other. So overall maybe an extra 3-5 minutes there.
-a small bit of Xavier leaving the banquet and getting loaded into an SUV and leaving with a convoy escort! Basically a presidential motorcade that speeds off and pulls into the institute.
-A tad bit more of Jean and her father of her being overjoyed. Everything after she switches is the same.
-A bit more of her fighting Nightcrawler. Nothing spectacular.
-I didn’t see any transformation scenes, not for Hank, not for Raven and not for Chastain. Perhaps that’s why I didn’t interpret them as shape shifters. The effects shots were likely not done. For instance, I’d see blue Raven and then the next shot would have JLaw.
- when The D’Bari land, what I saw was a shot of shooting stars over the lake with one of those ‘shooting stars’ slowing down and landing rather than one splitting into 3.
-The newscaster message about the mutant interments camps and the Jean Grey incident were played over Jean scrubbing blood in the rain. We didn’t hear Jean speak in my cut. Thankfully they changed that in the final because I loved Sophie’s acting.
-The scene of Chastain meeting the other D’Bari on the roof was different, for instance, no D’Bari and no mention of their homeworlds destruction. Notice how all of that is all off camera, you don’t see Chastain actually say any of those lines. It’s ADR, and in the one place you do see her say that, it’s out of context which was in the roof scene. It originally had her asking about humans, their chemical makeup, mutants, and someone mentions the X-Men and that the force has taken host within the member Jean Grey. This was much longer than the final cut.
-There was an additional scene of her meeting another that had long infiltrated the government and handing her an FBI badge and describing Earth’s governments. Probably another 5 minutes shaved off the total runtime with this cut.
-Jeans approach to Genosha had shown the inhabitants fearing her and beginning to run away until Selene and co stepped forward, who was noticeably absent here.
-Jeans conversation with Erik was slightly longer and ended on a different note, with her saying “or what” and her eyes flowing at him as she stood up.
-Erik’s line from the trailer was gone, which he was supposed to say right before she flew away. It was longer than we hear in the teaser trailer. “I’ve seen evil, I know what it looks like when it’s staring back at me and I’m looking at it now”.
-Slightly longer scene of Chastain and her right hand arriving at Jeans house, starting with an overhead shot of her opening her umbrella which uses a different shot in the movie. There was also more of her walking up to the house.
-Jean and Chastain at the bar was longer. “You think you don’t belong here, you don’t”. That was cut.
-Some of Storm in the sub basement was cut. She had a line “Where Scott goes, I go. If he needs me, I’m there, end of discussion”
-Shot of the landed X-Jet in Central Park as we see Magneto and co walking up to Selene is cut.
-Basically all of Storm and Selene's fight choreography is cut, in addition to a few more moments of Selene using her powers to make Nightcrawler band around and get closer to her.
-Completely different structure for Erik getting thrown out of the window. The helmet breaking and him being thrown happened at the same time. I saw an overhead shot of it fracturing in every direction from his head and him being ejected out at the same time. It username an alternate take to show off Fassbenders reaction and fear from what I’ve been told.
-Hologram scene featuring the D’Bari home world destruction was redone. This is entirely different in good ways and bad ways. Notice most of their speech between each other doesn’t feature their mouth on screen. ;)
-Jean was also to have slight fire in her hair in this scene, part of which was completed from the first original version of the film and wasn’t altered for the new 3rd act yet, which saw it removed.

*EVERYTHING after Jean stopping herself now from killing Xavier is from reshoots with the sole exception of the school rename and Summer Fontana’s astral plane scene.
-Most of Chastain’s lines after Jean stops attacking Xavier were new, Xavier was just supposed to say “she will kill us all” and she hisses “yessssss”
-Can’t remember if I saw it in the final cut or not but I’m almost certain that it’s cut. Vuk was supposed to have a full face reveal after she gets up on the roof after Scott blasted her, while they were all being carried away. Then we were to see her face heal over itself and her stare at the stars taking in her newfound heightened senses. Then she was to look down at the mutants being loaded up into armored vans.
-Scott had a speech about what Raven would have done that united both sides as they were captive. All that was cut, it was repetitive to Xavier’s speech but it should have gone to Scott.
-Train fight was mostly the same, hard to tell it was pre-viz when I saw it intercut with fresh, bare, footage. I did notice that they took a shot out of a ship flying above the train and a lot more alien soldiers raining down on the train.
-Chastain was supposed to do a superhero landing on the team, with the speed pushing her skin she grew out of place and it healing back. THEN she was to rush at Beast.
-PHOENIX FORMING AROUND JEAN AS IT INTERTWINED WITH THE TRAIN AS ITS CARS FLOATED IN THE SKY. Was entirely Pre-viz so probably cut for budget and impact of the space Phoenix.
-ALL of Jean’s fight choreography was cut. She was to have a massive fight with onslaughts of the aliens that were coming out of the rubble ending with her disintegrating then all after being stabbed with the pole.
-When Vuk rushes at Jean, Jean was supposed to dodge left and they had a brief fight before Vuk grabs her neck.
-Their exchange in space is ENTIRELY DIFFERENT.
Vuk “You could have been a God”
Jean“I’d rather die a mortal”
-There was an additional shot back to the bar Jean and Chastain met in with the tv news now with Jean Grey as being remembered as a hero, having died while saving Earth from unknown forces.

Overall, I liked some of the tweaks pertaining to two scenes in particular for personal reasons, but I felt that the pacing was much stronger in the longer cut. All of the film’s non script related issues could have been avoided. With all of the above 22 minutes were cut, I was told.

I just remembered that this had an Oscar winning editor on it. So who’s idea was it cut all this out? The studio?

Wow I got the total opposite. I thought this battles was horrendous. That Psylocke wanna be and dreads guy were ridiculous , and they literally took all that time to go one block over to the townhouses. And magneto pulling the subway cart from underground when there were like 20 cars in front of him he could’ve used .... just so stupid. Horrible writing.
The New York battle was the worst and very poorly filmed. Red Lotus looked ridiculous choking Storm and Storm was so weak in it. Selene's psychic battle with Xavier also looked like a joke. And oh Magneto pulling out that subway just to enter the building... genius! Then Beast jumping up and down to cross the street and Cyclops trying to blast him and failing... who choreographed that scene? it was so bad!

I wonder if we will see the third act in the UN in the future. I really did not like the third act on the train.
The only thing i liked about it is how fierce Vuk was against the X-Men.

Mix of both. Don’t take Lee Smith for too much beyond the structure of the film. I told him that Azazel and Raven were Nightcrawler’s parents and gave me this face:

“The red guy is the blue guy’s dad!?! Now that you mention it they look exactly alike”
He also edited First Class. He’s not invested in these stories but the editing was miles better in the version I saw.

The pre-reshoot version fleshed out Jean’s manipulation by Vuk more didn’t it?

Ah, yes. I had actually forgotten that was a real event.

:lmao: I thought something felt familiar about that!

I really wasn't a big fan of the alien plot. I don't think they needed to be expressly malevolent. Keeping it simpler like "this thing destroyed our planet and as the last of our species, we've tracked it across the galaxy to destroy it" would have been cleaner than all the exposition about exactly what this power was which they somehow knew everything about and their desire to use it to conquer the earth. I guess aliens just became a thing in universe in that decade gap between movies as well, because nobody seemed to be surprised by their existence.

It was a rip-off Skrull / water downgrade version of the Shi'Ar Empire ugh

Mystique survived three adamantium claws to the gut.

And Kinberg picking a weak line after initially writing a good one? And blaming it on Disney? Please. You guys know Kinberg right?
Magneto was just a bad ass in this film the things he did was like effortless! McKellen’s version was never this cool (sorry).
I think McKellen will be fine LOL
I liked how Magneto told Beast to help Storm
See I cringed when those were happening. It was weak when JLaw was doing it in space, telling each individual team member what to do and it was weird Magneto doing it. These are ADULT men and women and here they seem like lapdogs just waiting for a command.

It was also weird how many "I need you"'s was said. SHOW DON'T TELL Kinberg!

so this is what I saw from other forum. atrl

Fox execs expected this huge invasion style attack on New York, with the X men battling along side.

What they got was just Jean and Scott saving civilians and UN leaders, Charles is also there, but his powers don’t work on aliens, so was a liability more than anything. The UN attack was scripted differently when this was going to be A TWO PART saga. (A WHOLE other messy story lol)

Also this old 3rd act was not well received by test audience, “long and bloated” “huge action set piece no substance”, was the kind of feedback they received. (XMen are imprisioned during this whole thing)

They initially wanted to redo the UN sequence with all the X Men present, but the sets had been long destroyed, and rebuilding them (it’s the biggest set of any X film) and acquiring the licenses and permits for the locations was too TIMELY and COSTLY.

They had to settle for the train sequence which was predominantly shot on a sound stage, with the exception of the leaked set pics, which were shot on a yard. This sequence as seen in the trailers, has all the Mutants fighting alongside each other, the REQUIREMENT Fox asked for.

also this from same user.

- Okay so there are some HUGE name OSCAR winning people behind the scenes creating this movie, look them up on IMDB. They ALL signed on to a FINISHED two part script, and were hired for their experience and talent, to bring together the huge undertaking of filming TWO movies.

- The two movies were to be filmed together. The plan was to film most of the huge action pieces first. So the UN set, the largest of any X film, as well as the New York night street battle set, were all being built. These to sets were the THIRD act sets for each movie, with the UN set serving as the HUGE invasion style finale for PART TWO! Part one‘s finale set, is still partially in THIS movie, albeit scaled down, and with key players missing. It also serves as the close of the second act, opposed to a final act battle.

- Fox, with about 2 months until principal photography, BLINDSIDED the entire team, CUT the budget and informed the creative team to scale it down to ONE movie. They were not told of any reason (no employee at Fox knew about the merger until it was announced, only higher ups). They scrambled. They had to rewrite an ENTIRE script, pulling together pieces and ideas from the old ones, while COMPLETELY cutting out characters, set pieces, sequences, and changing some characters motivations.

- The biggest omission from this is the Shi’ar!!!!! Yes the Shi’ar were to be introduced and fleshed out in the scrapped two part movies. Simon KNEW bringing them in this new script would be foolish, drawing away the spotlight from Jean. Having to do their origin story, as well as a certain character’s relationship with Charles, while also telling Jeans descent into darkness, in a two hour time frame, was UNREALISTIC. Things had to be cut guys.

- Jessica Chastain signed on to play LILANDRA! When the scripted changed, they had to delay her from shooting, while they figured out who she would play and how she would be involved. Eventually Jessica started TWO and a half months after all the other actors had started.

- Because they already had sets built for the original idea, they had to use them, also with the budget cut, they couldn’t just destroy them and build new ones. They incorporated them into this singular movie. While they had managed to rewrite the first two acts, by the time shooting had begun, THEY HAD BARELY a working script for the third act lol. Just ideas.

- The reason Jessica kept teasing her character was because even after the rewrites, they still intended her to be Lilandra. They filmed a whole scene of her introducing herself to the world as the Empress, although the Shi’ar are NOT named, instead she leads a mysterious grey humanoid alien race. They realised she resembled NOTHING of Lilandra, so shot an alternate version of her being nameless, which would have been the cut we saw, had they kept the old third act. Basically someone needed to have a chat with Jessica lmao!

- When Fox reviewed the footage, and seeing the test audience feedback, they realised their blunder, and allowed for additional photography to commence (reshoots). They realised in doing so, they would have to push back the film. Fox wanted the February date while Kinberg urged them for a later date, because the reshoots would end in September, and the film coming out in Feb wouldn’t allow enough time to edit, score and add effects. Keep in mind they are REPLACING a whole third act. Fox Announces the Valentine’s Day release anyway.

When everything was completed, FOX again realised the effects weren’t going to be complete lol, so agreed to move it to the current date, ON THE CONDITION a trailer was to be released in order to soften the delay. The trailer would have the new date, and would be the announcement. Somewhere in the shuffle, the company that cuts trailers, left the Feb date on and was released. The biggest LOL....

Because the delay in rewrites, they had to cut out, Storm, Beast, Magneto, who all had other commitments by the time filming the old third act had started. Easiest option was to have them “captured”. This new Sequence corrects that! Only Evan Peters (Quicksilver) was unavailable to do both (AHS) lol.

Not by much.
so this is what I saw from other forum. atrl
Yeah that’s what happened but all of it is an abridged version of what I posted several pages back. So much easier to have it in one spot.

So what happened?

Just a slight bit more of their conversation based around “what they fear they seek to destroy” that made Jean’s arrogance come to the forefront as she took a more proactive approach. It’s relatively the same as what we saw.

The movie originally being a two-parter is actually consistent with what Olivia Munn let slip in an interview (if I recally correctly, it was for a promo where she was whispering all throughout the whole thing).

As for Jessica Chastain originally signing up to play Lilandra, I’m not surprised. You don’t bring in an actress of her calibre just for her to play some random character. People speculating that she would be Lilandra following her casting announcement was a natural reaction.

Also even most of Jessica’s interviews she was describing the Lilandra character and not Vuk, that’s why they just told her not to say anything all together. In her first interview she said she took a lot of inspiration from a Vet coming to tell you your dog has to be put down. That in itself was Lilandra through and through.

Exactly. An Empress who must always be firm and strong in her convictions? I can see the appeal to her and I think she would have nailed it under a different material and director.

also this from same user.

Someone who knows a person who worked on the project.

Can I get a link to this, please?

Edit: Nevermind. Found it.
