And the BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT OF THE YEAR goes to... X-Men 3! Yay! Finally it gets some recognition it deserves. SR was the runner-up. X3 was also nominated in the Best FX. That went to DMC.

Heh. This is sweet irony, although I think SR sucked larger amounts than X3 did. Oh well...both deserve to be on the list. May their respective studios learn the lessons well. :whatever:

i don't understand why everyone is bashing ratner. he did a very good job with the time he had. he had no say in the script. at least x-3 feels more like a comic book movie and the action is awesome, unlike the first two x-movies. singer just towned down the characters too much.
i would like to see ratner do x-4, but fox needs to give him and the rest of the team enough time.

Na na na na! Thats good. It's actually a shame, but still good for their half writing character development asses.

I think that while SR may've been a disappointment, it still delivered in terms of quality and character development. Plus it wasn't like Superman had some amazing sequels that had to be surpassed, so in retrospect, it didn't have the same pressure nor did it have the same expectations.

Now X3, on the other hand, had high expectations and while some loved it and some hated it, both films had some major flaws that disappointed it's core audience.

The non-fans really liked Superman Returns and a lot of non-fans loved X3.

But I look on the bright side of SR, for at least it's getting a sequel and it gives Singer the chance to correct the mistakes, add a better and more equal villain to Superman, and so forth.

It was superman there was always expectation. He was the original spandexed superhero and had the power of 4 movies behind him. Either it wasn't going to live up to the first two of burn in hell like the second two. That was its spectrum.

Perhaps I should've explained more. It had been 18-20 years since Superman was on the big screen right? Granted with today's technology and special effects there was expectations in terms of seeing an updated Superman.

What I was explaining is that Superman Returns didn't have an X1/X2 to surpass you know? Whereas X3 had the potential to be greater than both, Superman didn't really have any films that it was supposed to surpass.

But that's how I look at things. Either way we look at it both films had major disappointments and failed to live up to their true potential. You have to remember that Superman 3 and 4 were HORRIBLE Superman films and fans, non-fans, and the creators would probably like to forget about them as a whole. At least the coming sequel can correct all of the mistakes.

true, the fans remember these things a lot more and the older generation as well. The kids who were in the cinema with me during superman loved it. There weren't many kids for X3 though, there were tons in when i saw X2 though.
i think superman is such an icon there is always expectation. I remember i got so annoyed there was a billboard i passed every day going to college that had superman advertising an electricity company.:csad: SR felt to me like a PR campaign to buy the dolls more than a movie so to hear the words truth and justice felt hollow. We expect alot out of such cultural icons

Well, on the SR forums they are shrugging off these awards, so I guess we can too then! :woot:

For me personally, I remember feeling utterly disappointed by SR when i left the cinema. I remember feeling exhilarated by X3 and wanting to see it again straight away. SR seems much better for me on DVD (I received the Ultimate Collection set for free, I didn't buy it). But I still think SR is less exciting. In SR, it gave us more Lex Luthor (zzzzz), copied huge chunks of the original STM (even in the plane scene, which is itself a copy of the helicopter rescue in STM, there was the copied dialogue and Lois's fumbling with the seatbelt reminded me of Rogue in the X-jet in X2). I also didn't like the plasticky-looking 'photo-realistic' CGI Superman in that sequence, but i admit i was gripping the seat with tension with the way the plane scene was filmed as it hurtled towards the ground. Most of Superman's flying in the movie was excellent, the effects were excellent (though it did feel a very synthetic and overly CGI movie).

For me, the excitement of Storm flying, seeing Angel, Beast, Juggernaut, Multiple Man, more of McKellen's Magneto and some good Phoenix moments far exceeded any pleasures i got from Superman. That's how I feel.

I'm not as much a fan of Superman as I am of X-Men, but I did expect Singer to deliver something even better than X2 because of the creative freedom, time, and budget he had at his disposal. He chose to do a rehash. It would have got more points from me if it had included the Krypton exploration sequence as a sci-fi wow moment of something never seen before, if he had made Superman less emo, effete and irresponsible and stopped laying on pretentious Christ imagery. Superman, Lois and Lex are pretty idiotic in this movie. And the opening scene with Lex getting the widow's money as lightning flashed melodramatically in the background was like a scene from one of those crappy TV movies on late at night.

That's my view. I still don't think Superman Returns is a load of rubbish, it is more a misfire, a misdirection, a series of poor creative decisions that reek of too much director's vision and not enough director's respect (or knowlege) of the original comicbook character.

SR was a fairly weak and derivative story that was told stylishly well (if rather dull in its colour tones). X3 was a great story that was sometimes weakly told although visually rich. Both movies have their failings. But I prefer X3 - it's more immediate, the story is more resonant...and this is despite the classic Phoenix Saga being a disappointment in places. I noticed Cyclops' quick death, Jean standing around at Alcatraz and Rogue taking the cure, and Storm not doing much on Alcatraz on my first viewing - and I didn't like any of that stuff... but the good far outweighed the bad.

AMEN to that brother. My thoughts exactly.

Biggest disappointment? For me, yes. Dark Phoenix and any other new potential villains pushed aside for Magneto yet again… rehashed dialogue and scenes (some scenes shot for shot… or if they felt like being creative, some were reversed). Hell, even the situational humor was the same. Seriously, do people even realize how much of this movie is pretty much a rehash of 2000’s X-Men? (Hmmm. That could make for an interesting post). Blah… and the movie leaves more questions than it answers, which makes for a terrible conclusion. Oh well.

How can X3 be a bigger disappointment than SR? People have been waiting almost 20 years for a Superman movie and SR missed the mark.

And people expected alot more from Singer than they did from Ratner so the fact that SR was mediocre had to be even more disappointing.

I think it was mainly due to the anticipation of the Dark Phoenix Saga.

The end of X2 showed a lot of promise of what was to come in the fututre, needless to say the politics, greed, and petty revenge ruined what could've surpassed LOTR as a trilogy or could've been in a class of its own.

I know the reason why X3 was a disappointment for me was how the Phoenix Saga was done, no Sentinels, killing of Cyclops, curing of Rogue and Mystique, no character development, and Angel being in the most useless scenes. Both films really missed the mark in my opinion.

SR is the better film in terms of quality and storytelling, whereas X3 is just a mindless action film in my opinion.
