XBOX Live HELP!!!

I'm currently trying to connect to xbox live but I have failed at every attempt. I own a cable/dsl modem and i am using the usb port instead of the ethernet port. I have connected my X360 to my modam via phone jack. Upon trying to connect to live the dashboard kept saying that the network adaptor is disconnected. I've been on the Xbox Support website and nothing seems to work. I disconnected the firewall to my LAN or DSL settings, I manually imput the numbers that I was told into my settings,and I have cleared the PPPoE settings which I didn't have in the first place. BTW, how do I even know if I have PPPoE? So, is there anything I can do that I haven't tried?

Your suppose to use your ethernet port not your usb port.
