Xbox Xbox Series X Thread

16tb is pretty big to begin with. Not sure how many people are hooking something that large up.

It will be all of them sooner or later.

Of course they will show more growth with Game Pass. They keep raising the cost of it. And will continue to do so right up to the mass exodus of players that only leaves a handful desperate to cling to it at literally any cost.

(I do not and never have used Game Pass)

Too late for that. My PC already does more than anything they can come up with. The console war is effectively over. Microsoft are a third party now happens to sell hardware.
The fact that they are still selling hardware means they are still committed to the console war.

No it doesn't. Steam sells hardware and Valve couldn't give a **** about the console war. Microsoft is currently dedicated to bringing their games to as many platforms as possible by definition, they're a third party now have essentially admitted defeat. Even in console generation they were ahead, playstation still wound up outselling before it was all said and done. I'm just glad they're being honest about it now.

No it doesn't.
Yes it does. Otherwise, why would they bother selling hardware at all?

The Steam deck is supposed to be a portable PC, not a portable console. So of course they couldn't give a **** about the war.

They're only dedicated to bringing their games to as many platforms as possible on a case by case basis. The vast majority of their IPs (before the publisher acquisitions) are still unavailable on competing consoles.

You're referring to the Ps3 and just because it wound up outselling the 360 doesn't mean the latter wasn't a success. It solidified Microsoft as a major player in the console space of the video games industry.

Considering the next Xbox could very well just be a dedicated streaming device that will a cost a fraction of what it costs to manufacture a traditional console, I'd argue that's why they're still in the hardware business.

Furthermore,Valve is about unvail a set top version of the Deck hardware essentially making the X Series completely useless. Id argue steams attitude toward the console market is incredibly relevant moving forward especially when they're arguably number 2 or 3 currenty in gaming space as whole. Xbox is in dead last right now.

I didn't say that 360 wasn't a success, but it was the closest they've ever been to being true competition and still managed to be outsold by the end of it.

Sony and Nintendo are the only real players in hardware now and they've carved out very specific audiences so they're not even competing with each other.

It's an incredibly interesting time for games because it'll either usher in a new age of innovation or triple A will stagnate further.

I would take the "case by case basis" with a complete grain of salt at this point.

They have their reason for being in the hardware business which means they are still competing with Sony & Nintendo to sell hardware.

But the Steamdeck is not considered a portable console, though. It's considered a portable PC. Its success has nothing to do with the Series X.

If we agree that the 360 was a success, then why does it even matter that it still ended up in 3rd place anyway?
Sony and Nintendo are the only real players in hardware now
So that would mean what...that Microsoft is a "fake" player in hardware now?
and they've carved out very specific audiences so they're not even competing with each other.
Nintendo and Sony both compete, and don't compete on the same time. They don't compete in the sense that you already explained, but they do compete on the sense that if a consumer has a budget of up to $500 maximum to spend only on hardware, then they have to choose one between the Ps5 and the Switch. They can't buy both.

At this point, Halo, Xbox's flagship game, is still console exclusive. I'm aware of the rumors, but in this instantaneous moment, there is no Halo on PlayStation.

Xbox is selling you a service now first and foremost and a device to access that service if you dont already have a device that will. The hardware aspect is completely secondary to what they do now. They are not competing in the hardware space anymore. Its that simple.

The steam deck is a PC in a console's form factor which isn't that much different than what you get with modern consoles given that they're all X86 based and just run custom operating systems which the steam deck does as well. The biggest difference is user customization. I can choose to run windows on a deck if I want. I can also choose to to customize the stock os with stuff like Decky loader.
The line between consoles and PC will be blurred even further when steam launches the home console version of the deck.

Considering Microsoft has ran the Halo franchise into the ground, the series not being on playstation (yet) isn't that big of a deal whenever console exclusives that actually matter are getting ported to everything. I have the entire Halo franchise on PC and spent less than 20 bucks without a gamepass sub to get it. That's a far bigger problem than playstation port if Microsoft were legitimately wanting me to buy their hardware. Part of why they went acquiring studios is because their first party franchises like Halo and Gears have been milked to death.

And most folks in the situation you outlined will likely buy the Nintendo product because that 500 bucks will get them more for their money so they're still not really competing.

I know that gamepass is the first priority and that hardware is the second priority, but that literally means it is still a priority. you are making it sound like it is not a priority at all. and if that were the case, they would've already announced no more Xboxes ever.

yes they are. otherwise, why are they still selling Xboxes and developing a successor to the Series X/S? we are going in circles now, man.

the key words are the first 5: The steam deck is a PC. sure it has its similarities to consoles which is why it's often compared, but the platform it falls under is still PC, not console.
The line between consoles and PC will be blurred even further when steam launches the home console version of the deck.
the lines already started getting blurred last gen with Ps4 and Xbone switched to being x86 machines but as long as developers keep the line distinct between consoles and PC, the market will have to see it that way too.

my point is that Halo is Xbox's flagship series. sure, it doesn't have the popularity that it used to have, but it's still the Xbox franchise. you think of Halo, you think of Xbox. they are synonymous. I don't think there is any IP, not even Gears of war, that can be identified with Xbox more.
And most folks in the situation you outlined will likely buy the Nintendo product because that 500 bucks will get them more for their money
that's besides the point which you're kinda proving by playing along with it, saying folks will buy one over the other which is literally competition at play.
so they're still not really competing.
no, they absolutely are and you just proved so in the scenario I pointed out; the folk bought a Switch instead of a Ps5, which means Nintendo gained a sale, and Sony lost one. that's competition at play.

And I'm like 80% certain that "successor" is going to be an X cloud streaming box. Is that really a console?

You're missing the point entirely. A home centered version of the steam deck IS direct competition to Xbox's current business model. The line between consoles and PC is a distinction without a real difference.

Is it really competing if you've already lost?

well, it's not really for me to decide if the next Xbox will be for streaming only. but if you'er genuinely asking me, then my answer is: I honestly don't know. we'll have to see how the industry and the public reacts to it.
You're missing the point entirely.
this is like the 5th or 6th time that we've had a conversation in this thread, and every time we have it, I always break up your post into sections to respond to individual points. if you don't do the same, then I won't know which point you refer to if you just respond to my whole post instead of breaking it up the same way I do.

so I have to ask: what point are you referring to that I'm missing?

a home centered version of the steam deck is still a part of the PC platform, and I never said that PC isn't in competition with Xbox.

I believe the PC platform is similar to Nintendo consoles vs. other consoles in the sense that PC competes and doesn't compete with consoles simultaneously. they don't compete in the sense that consoles are their own platform for plugging in and playing whereas PCs are always getting new and separate parts that the consumer opts to upgrade, but they do compete in the sense that if a consumer has a budget of up to $500 to spend, they have to choose between either one of the available consoles, or a combination of PC parts that add up to their budget.

they cannot have both.
Is it really competing if you've already lost?
first of all, I do not consider Xbox "lost" just because they're in third place. and second of all, yes! by the very definition of goods and services in economics, the Xbox Series X/S is still being manufactured and offered as competition to Ps5 and arguably the Switch in 2025. until Microsoft announces that they are leaving the console hardware space, this is still the reality.
