Submarine-Like Boat With $352 Million in Cocaine Seized by U.S.

Aug. 23 (Bloomberg) -- The Coast Guard seized a submarine- like boat loaded with $352 million of cocaine in the eastern Pacific Ocean and arrested four suspected smugglers.

The seizure on Aug. 19 yielded 11 bales of cocaine weighing 1,210 pounds, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection service said today in a statement posted on its Web site.

A surveillance aircraft patrolling the eastern Pacific spotted the vessel and guided a U.S. Navy ship to the scene, the Border Patrol said. As authorities moved in, the suspects scuttled the semi-submersible vessel and most of the cocaine on board. The Associated Press reported that the seizure occurred off the Coast of Guatemala.

The Border Patrol's Jacksonville, Florida, surveillance aircraft operations center has coordinated the interception of $2.2 billion of cocaine this fiscal year, according to the statement.
