The Dark Knight Rises You Have My Permission To Lounge - Part 4

They need to hand it over to Affleck 100%. Problem is I think he wants to make smaller movies and not just be locked in to the Feige type role. Nolan got the hell out before they could lock him in. Smart move by him.

I think Affleck is like Nolan. He only has interest in Batman and not the whole of DCEU.

For the past 20 years, WB/DC has not had a significant/bonafide superhero hit outside of Nolan.

Speaking both commercially and critically, since 1996, they've all been given a negative or mixed reception:

Batman & Robin (1997)
Steel (1997)
Catwoman (2004)
Constantine (2005)
V for Vendetta (2005)

Superman Returns (2006)
Watchmen (2009)
Jonah Hex (2010)
Green Lantern (2011)

Man of Steel (2013)
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016)
Suicide Squad (2016) ??

They aren't very good at this game, are they? How can they get The Dark Knight Trilogy so right and everything else so wrong?
DCEU movies standing on their own, I like this listing. :D

Some movies I did not watch even once, while others I will not watch again.
I still maintain that Catwoman is not in anyway related to any DC property, even if you count the (minor) influence of Batman Returns take on Catwoman.

It seems like a lot of unnecessary pressure for Affleck at this stage of his career.

If The Accountant and Live By Night hit the way they should, you have to wonder if accepting the Batman role was the right thing for him at all.

Especially with the divorce and other personal troubles he is going through recently. This whole DC trainwreck is not good timing for him.

Somehow, he always looks miserable no matter how much he forces a smile.

It's like he has Gone Girl playing in the back of his head ever since it came out.

Affleck is as unproven when it comes to this movie as David Ayer, or anyone else involved in the next slate of DCEU. While I have a lot of faith in his next Batman movie and I'm pumped for it, I definitely don't think Affleck if the answer to the rest of the DCEU's problems.

Nolan was unproven too and so was Burton. If Ben really doesn't want to do it, then I agree it's doomed for less than his best effort no matter what. Considering his track record in other genres, I don't blame him if he doesn't want to carry that burden around for a decade.

WB didn't get TDK Trilogy right. Nolan did.

Hopefully some of the Squad actors/characters get a second chance with a better team. Maybe with Affleck where hopefully WB step back a bit. I wouldn't want to see Smith or Robbie not play those characters again. Even if I don't like Leto after I see the movie, he has such little screen time that he deserves another shot.

This is wisdom.

One word: Christopher Jonathon James Nolan.

JJ Nolan? :o

And now for some tangible contribution to the topic at hand - I honestly believe DC's problem is their quite desperate and way too obvious goal of catching up to Marvel, one which was never feasible when one considers that Marvel had a big head start and it was always going to be difficult for DC to match them at their own game. I do appreciate that they've attempted to be different, at least, what with the whole 'darker' tone, but too often (at least so far with their movies) that attempt has seemed a lackluster attempt and a misunderstanding of why Nolan's movies were successful.

Not to mention the catastrophic mistake of having Zack Snyder 'mastermind' their shared universe. I use that term loosely, of course. And even he was rushed into things, what with doing BvS straight after Man of Steel, instead of having an actual sequel for the latter first and progressing/establishing a Superman who's grown beyond the moody/teenager period of his superhero career.

How about Burton/Cage/Keaton? Would be more interesting than Snyder's BVS.

I’m starting to feel bad for DC; they’re going to have to do something to turn this around. At this rate, Marvel doesn’t even have to do anything to combat them; they’re digging their own graves with these stinkers.

Here's a dude who saw the film in May and then this week.

Give it some time and there will be an extended cut. I won’t be surprised if it’s still bad but at least improves it a bit.

If most of the criticisms are editing, too many needle drops, and cut scenes that add some motivation...then it might actually be a good film. Unlike BvS which has some bad acting, no humor, dull characters that don't feel like themselves, and just too long. BvS in my opinion can never be a good movie even if the Ultimate Cut gave us a decent edit. So a different cut of Squad might actually turn it into something awesome.

Of course I could end up seeing this movie and think the critics are out of their mind.

If the studio has given a bad version of what could and should be a good film, that is really disappointing. In their effort to 'fix' the movie from perceived issues....they possibly made it worse. Very frustrating.

I'm tired of all the bonus material or extended cuts being held out for blu-ray releases with these last few DC films. WB/DC need to actually put out a solid theatrical cut for a film that isn't chopped to bits.

Makes me feel like a schmuck for demanding an extended cut for TDKR 4 years ago. Admittedly, I'd still buy that though.

Apparently you don't pay for the theater experience of a DC film. You invest money on the hopes that you get a decent edit later. For which you gotta pay again.
