Does anyone else find themselves getting incredibly annoyed when they hear people who are constantly using "filler phrases?" We discussed these in my Language and Culture class, and when people say things such as "you know what I'm sayin'?", "you know what I mean?", "um", "like", etc reveals a lack of confidence in what you're saying.

Sometimes when people are giving class presentations I find myself counting the number of times people say "um." So annoying.

Oh yeah I bust people on that toast all the time.

They smurfin hate me for it but I can't stand it

I hate it when people say things like "Yeah, um, I have, um, something to, um, say, um, about something I wanted to, um, talk about."

I used to say those all the time....

I, like, say that stuff, um, all the time. You know what I mean?

I'm guilty of all of the above:o

I say "You know?" sometimes but I say like a lot. I noticed that the other day.:o Not obsessively like a valley girl though.

It's "Naw mean?"

:oldrazz:

Teen girls and even some adult women are guilty of the "like" filler. Or instead of saying that he or she said something, they'll say, "and he was like, and she was like, etc." Off topic, but what also gets me is when females talk in a higher or lower inflection at certain points in a sentence where it has no bearing, like Stewie said about Brian's girl on Family Guy.:o

I say it because I can't help myself:( But I know this girl in my Human Geography class who purposely says it and it drives me NUTS:mad:

Is she one of The Plastics?:wow: Watch your back.:p

Another one that sets my head on fire is "basically".

When I worked at a movie theater, this in-bred, Danny DeVito-looking ******ed Mormon girl...somehow she learned the word "basically" and, I guess she thought it made her sound smart.

Her till was $20 short one day, the boss asked her what the deal was.
She goes, "Whull...BAYsickly, during that last rush I baysickly got really busy so basysickly I think I left some money on the counter by accident when I had to go back and change the Coke, so baysickly I think someone stole it."

I'm like, "You know what? Challenge me! Let's try to move beyond the "basics", 'cause I think I can "keep up" if we get into any complex ideas, compound words, analogies, stuff like that."

I'd find a person that actually pauses and says nothing as opposed to using the fillers more intellectual. In interviews they'll sit and ponder what they want to say.

But if they do it on the phone then I unt them down and step on their ear.

What really bothers me is when those preppy girls say things like "That was like, SO TOTALLY AWESOME!"
