On the Today Show this morning they had a featurette called "Lawn Mower Safety", specifically aimed at riding mower accidents involving children. The couple in question was, on one Saturday morning, not watching their child, and the wife (whilst mowing the lawn) backed over her child.
The show made them seem very much like victims in the matter as the incident eventually led to the death of their son, after several attempts to save his life. It seemed to blame the lawn mower's first and foremost. "I don't know what I was thinking getting on [the lawnmower] that day" said the wife "[Our son] was always inside or on the deck". She describes backing up and seeing a bump, only to look down and realize her son was that bump. A very tragic fate for him indeed. Now the family goes and speaks about "Lawn Mower Safety" around the country.
I'm glad they never came to my town because I'd have to ask them "just how ******ed are you?" After the Today show made such a big deal about the lack of rear view mirrors, the sharpness of the blades and the lack of good stearing I just had to ask. Why wasn't she, oh I dunno, looking where she was going. How about a little common sense. "You mean you weren't looking behind you when you backed over your son?" Wow, that's stupid.
I have a riding mower, had it for quite some time, and the thing goes what...2 miles an hour, tops. I could walk faster than it at top speeds. Certain accidents with it are certainly understandable. Sometimes they malfunction, sometimes stuff gets caught up in blades and sometimes they catch fire...I've heard of all those things and gone "wow, sucks for them". This though, this scares me. How can Matt Lauer sit there straight faced and pretend not to be offended at the clear stupidity being showcased here. If you hit a person with a car, you're in deep sh**. If you run over your son with a profoundly slower and easier to control piece of equipment, society sees you as the victim. Bullcrap. These people ought to be held accountable. You run over a living thing like that because your so totally oblivious, no one should be taking your side.
