Matthew Vaughn pitched a story with Cloe Moretz as the lead. Some suggest this may have carried over to JJ's current EP VII.

Personally I don't have a problem with this. By the film filming rolls around, Cloe Moretz will actually be 17 years old. Maybe they could go with Jennifer Lawrence. But I really like the idea of a Joseph Campbellian 'chosen one' being a young woman. It's fresh.

I think some of us expected Jedi Master Denzel Washington and charming rogue Robert Downey Jr going around the galaxy getting into all kinds of kick ass encounters against Gran Moff Tom Hardy, but really there's plenty of time for that in the spin offs. I really want the ST to be a continuation of the kind of storytelling that was in the OT.

Is a young female lead all that bad?

I love the idea. Just because many Hollywood writers can't handle women and especially female (super)heroic leads like normal people doesn't mean it's an inherently bad idea.

Especially if it's Chloe. She's ridiculously talented. Or a Fanning girl. Probably Elle. Not as over-exposed as Dakota.

Well I have a lot more faith in Arndt and JJ than I would in most, I doubt they'll turn it into Twilight, which is what I think most people are worried about.

I don't think people are worried mostly about that. Besides, people got their taste of bad romance with AotC and a bit or RotS.

It's a fact that many movies with female leads sucked ass, not least due to the way the leads themselves were written. See: the Tomb Raider films, Aeon Flux etc.

Just because there's a female lead, doesn't necessarily mean romance. Luke doesn't get laid during the OT.

Not ever, if you don't count the EU. He has a son named Fap Skywalker.:ninja:

And I agree about the romance thing. Even ST09's romance subplot was very subtle. Who knows?

I love the idea of a young female lead. A New Hope started off with a young male lead, so I think it's only fair we get a female lead this time.

And then 2 gay leads for Eps10-12!:awesome:

hehe...suurre...i'm sure that would fly really well with the GE. Who is well known for being so open minded. /sarcasm
:)

Well, depending on what the story is, it could be great if done right. I'm keeping my mind open to anything at this point. Who knows what the story will be...

I would very much like to see this. It'd be a nice way to keep it fresh and the fear that it would turn into Twilight is unfounded when there is a good writer and director at the helm.

As for who, I'd hope for Chloe Grace Moretz as she is a great actress and, if they want, can last more films. If not her, perhaps Jennifer Lawrence, as you suggested.

I always prefer unknowns; growing with them as a story progresses is fun.

I've been over-exposed to Chloe and Lawrence. They're the default for a strong young woman.

It reminds me of everyone wanting Angelia Jolie to play Catwoman. :oldrazz:

Since Chloe looks similar to Mark Hamill, I bet he was pitching it to be about Luke Skywalker's daughter.

And I have a strong feeling, they're going to keep the franchise within the Skywalker family. I mean, Star Wars IS about the Skywalkers. So I bet it's a strong possibility that this new trilogy will revolve around Luke Skywalker's daughter.

why not have the new trilogy revolve around the Solo twins, and the new female lead can be Jaina Solo........

doesn't really matter to me. but I would be fine with a strong female jedi lead, whether it's an original story or an adaptation of an EU story.

They ain't going to be adapting EU universe. Too constricting. The only continuity they should worry about is the films themselves and what works best for this film. Just like what J J did with Star Trek.

Yeah, I'm all aboard this female lead concept, especially if we follow her journery across a group of films like we did Luke and Anakin.

The lead needs to be a triple threat: can sign, dance, and act.

I am 100 percent in favor of this. It's one of those things I think live action SW has been sorely missing.

Downey and Washington? ...who expected that?

I don't see anything wrong with a female lead.

The EU has some good examples they can take inspiration from.

I also like the idea of a female Jedi mentor. We haven't seen that (in the films). Kreia in Knights of the Old Republic 2 was one of the better characters in the entire franchise.

Even though she turned out to be a Sith Lord?

Thought that helped, actually. Gave the character more complexity than the typical two-dimensional characters in the franchise (especially the villains, who often border on cartoon villains).

Not that I'm saying the female Jedi mentor has to be a Sith lord.

I'm just saying it's something we haven't seen before, and can clearly work quite well.
