Hey guys. Cash here with a new topic to discuss.

Recently I've been dressing like this.

And when I am in my hometown with a population of a hundred thousand I get a lot of disregard and comments saying "I'm a (insert gay joke here)" or "you try to hard" kind of thing.

But when I head off to a major city like Toronto or New York city i get a lot of compliments and such.

Your thoughts on men dressing out of the norm?

I like old old school men's fashion-suits, ties, hats, but men (including myself) are too lazy to dress well and most of us dress like pigs. Ergo, fashionable men's clothes are more expensive because there's limited interest.

That stuff looks absolutely hideous to me. Whatever works for you though, certain areas are different about it.

You can afford to look more cosmopolitan in a larger city because you basically don't stand out as you would amongst your more townie brethren.

I like it! I like when guys feel like they can express themselves. I mean, truthfully everyone dresses "fashionable" to fit in with one group or another. T-shirt and jeans is as much as statement as wearing a meat dress.

That's one of the things I loved about Europe. The guys dressed so well, and not neccessarily in that "look at me" sort of way you see in fashion shows but in the darker and better textured suits or styles of James Bond or Don Draper. That's cool.

When I got back to Australia I realised everyone shops at the same shops just about and anything that's considered too fashionable turns you into a leper. It's sad that people feel we must all dress the same.

Maybe not as brightly coloured as that stuff, but similar. Or if i'm out casually just some nice jeans and shirt or jumper. Decent shoes/trainers are a must really.

Work if you want to, I say!

I'm a girl and I'm usually too lazy to dress nice. :funny: But I'm at the point in my life where I'm just like, "Rock on!" to people expressing themselves. :awesome:

I think dress however you want if thats how you feel comfortable or want express yourself.

I think most guys can't be bothered to dress 'fashionable' they dress in whatevers comfortable.

Here London you see people wearing all kinds of stuff so if your a small town hick it will probably come as a culture shock.

There has certainly been a explosion of metrosexual guys over the last decade who are inspired by dudes like David Beckham, Ryan Gosling, Tine Tempah, Kanye West, George Lamb and so on who are dressing more fashionable.

I've started liking suits recently after having hated wearing them most my life.

Location and occasion are two biggies for how to dress. There is nothing wrong with over dressing or dressing in bright colours (I like to do the former but not usually the ladder.) Just don't be surprised when you get an off comment. Also keep in mind, a lot of negativity can come from feeling threatened or jealous that you are looking good. Course, they may just think you look funny. Either way, the most important thing is never dress for anyone but yourself. That way what other people think will never matter as much as your own opinion.

Sorry, but anyone who dresses like THAT should be laughed at.

There's a difference between something looking good, and something seen on a runway. Just because you see it in a fashion show does NOT mean its a good look or even remotely fashionable. Those pictures are a plague on the eyes, and the guy on the far left looks like the albino from Venture Bros.

Edit - I'm not trying to say you shouldn't wear what you want. I'm just saying, if you dress like a clown, you shouldnt be surprised or upset when people laugh. Because that's what people do when they see clowns. :oldrazz::woot:

^ HAHA!!! He does look like him. That light blue jacket is hideous, as are this blue shoes and salmon pants.
But if that's how you want to dress, then that's how you want to dress. I'd surely dress nicer if all mens clothes weren't made to fit skinny little model boys with no legs or arms. I have to buy two sizes up in from my actual waist because my legs are so damned big. I'm even buying the loose fit type of pants, and they don't fit right.

I agree 100%

Men dressing "fashionable" is one thing - I dress fashionably and try to look good a majority of the time.

But dressing like that? Ugh, those pictures look god awful. If I saw someone dressed like that - I wouldn't openly insult them, because well, that's just rude, but I would certainly be silently judging their choices.

I hate this hipster BS...everyone should dress like they do in Mad Men.

They wouldn't look as ridiculous if the colours weren't so bright and they didn't feel the need to tuck their pants into their socks.

The second picture from the left is great... if he didn't have bright green pants on.

Change it to hunter green, and it would look great.

Maybe get rid of the bright yellow socks too :D

The look on the far right is great too. Although those shoes don't seem to go with it well. Get some dark blue or creamy ones.

Yep.

Either way for me, I wouldn't dress like that.

I have to say the word 'fashoin' has never entered my head when I have shopped for clothes. I used to buy jeans and jakcets out of a shop called Flip, that specialised in 'vintage American clothing', it was essentially a glorified second hand clothes shop, they'd get all these old jeans from the states and dye them, but they had some great jeans that felt good, and racks of jackets that were pretty good, just your luck if they had a good one in your size.

Apart from that, I'd just look in second hand clothes shops and get anything that i thought would suit me.

I don't like wearing jumpers much though, maybe it is a superhero thing, haha, you never see them pulling a jumper over their head when they run into the phone booth or revolving doors, they are always pulling their shirts open.
But really it more to do with the fact i don't like to feel constrained by clothing, and a jumper can make me feel like that.
The wild man needs a shirt, comfy relatively lightweight shoes or trainers, jeans or dark dress trousers, and a jacket with good lapels.
When I have worn suits, I have always really enjoyed wearing them, it is very interesting how strangers treat you differently when you wear a suit, you walk into a bar, a shop, anywhere you are being served, and the person is more pleased to see you, as it looks like you are part of the establishment and are playing the same game they are, so you are not as random and unknown a quantity to them.
I recall wearing a suit to a job interview, and then wearing it for a couple more days just for the hell of it, because the reactions I got were so different, like, it was nice not to be treated as a weirdo on sight for a change. But then a couple of my weirdo pals took the piss out of me wearing a suit, so i stopped , haha.

nothing wrong with dressing fashionable and/or out of the norm. but the examples in the original post are pretty off-putting.

I think the issue with someone dressing like in the pic is there's only a small percentage of men that can pull those looks off and there's such a large percentage of men attempting and failing at that look. I'm into fashion but I know I would look ridiculous like that. If you can pull it off, more power to you. I personally think that's a good look (maybe not the rolled up pants).

:yay:

People should be able to dress however they want to.

and they can! you can dress however you want...but that will never stop people from judging.

and if you're walking around like Joseph and the technicolor dream coat you'll definitely be judged.

btw, "fashionable" (with the quotes) is definitely right. From the general population's standpoint, that's goofy ass fashionable. Loud and obnoxious clothing combos.

Is it a phase? Please tell me it's a phase my bf will eventually get into. Cause my bf dislikes dressing in suits (hell, in his normal suit set, the pants don't even match the jacket  ) but I loooooove guys in suits. :hrt:
