In an era of constant (and generally pointless) movie reboots and remakes, what projects do you think would actually benefit from a re-invisioning?
For me, three movies come to mind immediately...
1. Alien 3
Before its endless rewrites and underneath all of its poor direction and editing, there lies a lot of extremely good subtext and meaning in Alien 3 that very much ties into the previous two films and has a lot of relevancy.
I would like go to back to the original core concepts of the movie. Create a tone and art design that's a solid mixture of Alien and Aliens and finally put a fitting and emotional end to the Alien series (let's all forget about Resurrection).
2. Sunshine
I just recently saw Sunshine for the first time, and while I loved the concept, I found the overall script and directoral vision to be quite lacking.
If you went back to the original concept, and added in more of the tension and horror of Alien, mixed in the awe of 2001, and most of all, tightened up the plot and focus of the film to something that's more about the horrors and solitude of space rather than the inter-character drama and action, I think you'd have a stellar sci-fi film.
3. Metropolis
I know it's probably sacralidge to even suggest that Metropolis be remade, but the film is so rifed with subtext and subtly well beyond its time, I'd love to see a version of the film who's visuals (and sound, obviously) could actually do the story justice.
Obviously, it would require an incredibly talented director who would adapt Lang's vision with an intelligence and humble nature that most directors don't have, but it it could be done, it would be incredible.
