Hey, so i'm on a movie buying kick right now... and I love shopping for them on amazon, I currently own just over 400 movies... and was wondering what top 10 would you recommend that maybe most people haven't seen? (this is to avoid superhero films, disney animation, block busters and the usual "top" lists)

My top 10... while incredibly hard to choose... would probably be at least these...

-Saved!
-Imaginary Heroes
-Before Sunrise
-(500) days of summer
-Charlie Bartlett
-The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys
- Threesome
- Liberty Heights
- Almost Famous
- Death Becomes Her

If I had to recommend ten random movies that someone might not of seen...You had some good suggestions I would of used but decided not to include any of those.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
In Bruges
Mary and Max
Pan's Labyrinth
The Descent
Never Let Me Go
District 9
Weirdsville
Son of Rambow
Way of the Gun
Bubba Ho Tep

I own etsm, in bruges, pan's, and district 9. Great films

What's mary and max about? Haven't heard of it.

Been wanting to see never let me go. Haven't heard of weirdsville either

It's claymation but not for kids. This 8 year old girl in Australia who finds a pen pal in a 44 year New Yorker that has asperger's syndrome . Basically she asks him all life's questions with funny results. It's surprisingly moving . Phillip Seymour Hoffman does the voice and is practically unrecognizable , also Toni Collete is great.

Weirdsville is a dark comedy with Scott Speedman and Wes Bentley. They play druggies who try to bury a friend that overdosed but wind up running into satanists, midgets , and overall just a night of insanity.

Waking Life
Buffalo 66'
Tsotsi
Equilibrium
They Live
Idiocracy
The Fountain
Animatrix
Gattaca
Election

My 12 Favorite of All-Time, in order:

1. The Shawshank Redemption
2. Heat
3. The Dark Knight
4. Inception
5. The Insider
6. The Silence of the Lambs
7. The Shining
8. Eyes Wide Shut
9. The Exorcist
10. 500 Days of Summer
11. Wait Until Dark
12. The King of Comedy

oh i'd also recommend Eulogy, and Drop Dead Gorgeous... hilarious films

My 12 Favorite of All-Time, in order:

1. The Shawshank Redemption
2. Heat
3. The Dark Knight
4. Inception
5. The Insider
6. The Silence of the Lambs
7. The Shining
8. Eyes Wide Shut
9. The Exorcist
10. 500 Days of Summer
11. Wait Until Dark
12. The King of Comedy

ehrm... this isnt just a reg "top 10 list" movies like Exorcist, Dark Night, Shawshank, Silence of the Lambs, the shining, and inception shouldn't be on your list lol

it's suppose to exclude block busters, typical "top" favorite movies (like most movies on AFI's top 100), and be more about recommending lesser known good movies.

Let the right one in
Let me In
Moon
Trick R Treat
Wristcutters: A Love story
Black Dynamite
Henry Fool
Whip It
Wet Hot American Summer
Freaked

I say Let the Right One In and Let Me In, becasue, they are really the same movie, but still different. I know a lot of people were pissed they remade the swedish version, but the remake was actually a very good movie too. So my advice, see both and ecide for yourself.

Also, the movies taht other people have said that I have seen (500) Days of Summer, Almost Famous, Bubba Ho Tep, Eternal Sunshine, Pans Labyrinth, In Bruges, and Idiocracy are all great awesome movies.

- Barfly (Mickey Rourke's best performance)

- The Dead Zone (Christopher Walken's best performance)

- Silent Running (great early 70s sci-fi movie with Bruce Dern, Lucas got the idea for R2-D2 from this)

- Crumb (doc on the underground comic book artist, and his truly crazy brothers)

- Withnail and I (the UK fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, v funny)

- El Topo (v strange but great gunslinger/western flick, John Lennon loved this movie)

- Trust (an amazing Hal Hartley movie, if you were to pick one from the list I would say go for this one. About an outsider/rebel guy who always carries a hand grenade about with him 'just in case', who ends up taking care of a young pregnant woman who has been kicked out of the house, really funny and touching)

- Gregory's Girl (an extremely funny story set in a Scottish secondary school, about the school goalkeeper who falls for a girl who joins the football team, who is better at football than all the boys)

- Dig! (a doc about two bands, charting their progress, they start out as friends, but become bitter rivals, the dandy warhols and the brian jonestownmassacre)

- Little Big Man (starring Dustin Hoffman as an ancient old man telling his story of how he was involved in many of the most famous incidents in the old west)

From Hell
V for vendetta
Secret Window
Battle Royale
The Good, the Bad, the Weird
One Hour Photo
Naked Lunch
High Fidelity
Chasing Amy
The Basket Ball Diaries

Trainspotting
Skeletons
This is England
The Ladykillers [1955 version]
Rashomon
The Harder they come
Arsenic and old lace
Once upon a time in the west
Brazil
There will be blood.

entropy
the insider
city of god
clerks
kiss kiss bang bang
death at a funeral (original)
amores perroshukkle
mar adentro
Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown

The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys, basically the best ever representation of what its like to be 14.
History of Violence
Garden State, I think more people just know of it by it's soundtrack than have actually seen it.
Brick
Being John Malkovich
The Devils Backbone
THX 1138
Dan In Real Life (Suprisingly Good)
Rollerball, the original

I would also like to add 4th planet of the apes movie, which IMHO is very underrated.

Ones I can rewatch time & time again and recommend would have to be:

Serenity
Hellboy
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
Wing Commander
When Harry Met Sally
Slither
Waitress
Stranger Than Fiction
Enchanted
I Love You, Man

Kingpin, highly under-rated movie.
Very funny, Bill Murray has a small part but it still ends up being one of his best.

Throne Of Blood - Creepy adaptation of Macbeth, brilliant action sequence and plot twist at the end.

Ok, maybe a few people have seen this, but it's the underdog of Sergio leone movies.
For A Few Dollars More - Like "Once Upon A Time In The West" but better paced and less convoluted. More about images and sound above all else.

Let The Right One In - Twilight if it wasn't complete pap.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1139797/

6a00d83451c2d869e201156f3d824e970c-800wi

Ninja Scroll - The Only decent anime movie made. Kinda like Yojimbo in a fantasy setting. Makes Biowares idea of "dark fantasy" look like disney land.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0107692/

ninjascrollliveaction.jpg

Cherry 2000 - B-Movie. Mans sex robot breaks due to leaking washing machine, hires bounty hunter Melanie Griffith to help him get a replacement, big adventure, realizes Melanie Griffith better than sex robot at end of movie. Waste of time.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0092746/

Nosferatu The Vampyre - Werner Herzog version of Nosferatu. Very creepy slow movie, more about mood than ooga-booga. Way better than Francis Ford Coppola's Dracula (1992)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0079641/

nosferatu-1979-klaus-kinski1.jpg

Grizzly Man - Werner Herzog again. Documented tapes of an increasingly disturbed personality pushing towards his own grave with a distorted whimsical view of nature that can be bent to his own reality. He ends up being eaten alive, along with his girlfriend who he took along for the ride. Sad, funny, disturbing and ultimately facisnating movie.

seeing some great recommendations in here, some i can't believe i didn't think of.

Ten movies most people aren't likely to have seen. Hmm...

The Grizzly Man is a good one.

Brotherhood of the Wolf also comes to mind.

Among geeks and the like, Weird Al's UHF is popular, but it's a great comedy that should have more exposure.

Harryhausen's Jason and the Argonauts is another movie appreciated in certain circles, but most (younger) people haven't seen it.

The Ape, by James Franco is a great example of his acting and talent (for those who like that sort of thing), and it's highly entertaining.

Not sure if Black Dynamite counts for this, but it's definitely a movie I've recommended in the past.

The Rankin/Bass version of The Hobbit is still close to my heart.

I can't think of any more.

American History X
Thank you for smoking
Serenity
Across the Universe
Gross Point Blank
Snatch
Collateral
Salton Sea

off the top of my head

Pi
Synecdoche, New York
Blue Velvet
The Fall
Y Tu Mama Tambien
Primer
Bottle Rocket
American Splendor
Black Dynamite
Bunny and the Bull

Let the right one in
