I just got an xbox 360 and a 12 month gold account but you've gotta tell me how I can appear offline all the time. MY FRIENDS ARE ON ALL THE TIME!!!!! I know you can appear offline by going to preferences and online status but you have to log in first so everyone knows you're there, leaving the whole thing pointless.

I'm not a bad person. I just don't want to talk ALL THE TIME!

Go to your profile. Go to sign in preferences. And then turn off auto sign in.

Now you can choose to appear offline before logging in.

There are privacy settings you can access from the My Xbox section of the dashboard I think, the square next to "Play Game/Open Tray". From there you can set "Online Status Viewable" to "Off", amongst other things. Or you could just turn off notifications and ignore them.
