Zak Penn Talks Hulk’s Color And ‘Avengers’ Movie Plans

Don’t make “The Incredible Hulk” screenwriter Zak Penn angry…you wouldn’t like him when he’s angry. How can you avoid it? Don’t ask him if his latest incarnation of the classic Marvel superhero will be grey.
“That’s just a mistake, it’s not going to be grey. Of course he’s going to be green,” Penn admonished, responding to rumors circulating about a color change for the iconic mutant. In fact, Penn himself is green with envy over the way the Incredible Hulk was portrayed in the Lou Ferrigno television show, and told MTV that he wants the character to move in the direction of these classic roots. “I always felt about Ferrigno and the makeup was a much more naturalistic version of the Hulk. And that’s what we’re trying to go back to. His skin will appear more real,” Penn divulged. “In the first movie he was so green. He’s not going to be bright green.”
It’s a move towards realism that Penn hopes will permeate the reboot. “It’s not going to have the split screen and all that stuff because it’s more like a real thriller, man on the run, fugitive style movie,” Penn revealed of the flick’s plot. “That’s what I want to see.”
In a few years, the only thing greener than Hulk might be the money the character pulls in. Hulk will most likely also appear in an “Avengers” movie Penn is scripting, the screenwriter confessed.
“‘Avengers’ is definitely going to happen; the idea was always to do a crossover with multiple superheros,” he revealed of the superhero tag team group, Marvel’s answer to DC’s Justice League. “I’m waiting to let ‘Iron Man’ and ‘Hulk’ come out because those are two characters that could appear in it. I used to think that movie would be impossible to make but now I feel like it’s not.”
Is Zak Penn the right guy to pull off “Hulk” and “Avengers?” Tell us in our comments.

Man I'm so happy Marvel got these rights back. Now we're gonna see Iron Man & Hulk in the Avengers on film!

Is "The Incredible Hulk" a reboot of the Hulk? The Hulk with Eric Bana has nothing to do with this one right?

It starts off with Banner on the run so in a way it takes place after the Hulks origin so it's a continuation of the timeline. It's more of a makeover or reboot of the style, characters, and direction. It's not like 50% of the film is going to be an origin again. No.

This is the most awesome news. First my two favorite superheroes are going to be on the big screen next year in what look to be two amazing movies, now this.

I cant say or predict how this movie will turn out. The last time someone did a movie he wanted to see & ignored the fan base it ended up hated. If Zak is only focusing on what he wants & is going the way of Singer then well I dont see a bright future for this reboot.

I just hope they do a self-contained Thor movie before they do Avengers.

Wasn't a couple of peoples problems with Ang lees Hulks that it was way to "realistic" and "deep"? I wonder what zak Penn means more by more realistic, you can't get more realistic then the first one.

Realistic looking. Realistic storyline as far as his actions. Ang Lee's while great to me had it's inconsistencies. It tried to take itself too serious while at the same time trying to maintain the feel of a comic book. They're trying to target the larger audience that enjoyed what they knew as the Hulk. That's what he wants. That's what I want.

That's all I want as well. That and a kick ass brawl with the Abomination!

Ang Lee's movie was poorly paced and growing cartoony Hulk just didn't sit right with general audiences. This reboot is a great idea and the cast is phenomenal. Both Iron Man and Incredible Hulk will be amazing.

Doesn't anyone else have problems in seeing how Hulk can fit into an Avengers movie (especially seeing as he's being written as a fugitive by Penn)?

Um, not really, considering that he was basically a fugitive being hunted by the other heroes as part of the traditional Avengers origin.

I just watched Chronicles of Riddick and am now more convinced than ever that Karl Urban should be Thor. He needs to hit the gym big-time, though!

So does this mean "man in green makeup" for Hulk?

Zak Penn is starting to make me angry. :cmad:

I did not like that statement either. I did not like the Hulk portrayed as a 2-ton lifting 6'7" weightlifter when he is meant to be laerger then life. Of course, he could just be talking skin tone which I would be fine about.

I believe that's what was meant. A paler, more believable green rather than the nearly fluorescent(sp?) one we got in the 1st movie. And they've already said there will be not size change for the Hulk. I'd be happy with him being about the size he was in his 1st transformation in the last movie, but with a skin tone more like the TV show(minus that ridiculous 70's hair) and a more monstrous look facially. Also with him being a little more vascular looking and less doughey. That would suit me just fine.

I wish people would stop calling this movie a reboot. That term only confuses people into thinking this is Hulk Begins, which I still wish it was of course ... oh well ...

I've always tried to resist the notion of Urban as Thor - chalking the 'Urban for Thor' calls as just fanboy knee-jerk reaction to seeing someone who mildly resembles the character on the big screen (in the LOTR films):-

I have problems with his face

-his face is too big, wide, fat, whatever for Thor. Thor should look like he's chiseled from granite ala Dolph Lundgren:-

Plus, I don't see Urban ever getting the build required for Thor - not even with all the roids in the world and ten years in which to train (and yes, I am taking his build in Pathfinder into account as well):-

IMO - he just doesnt have what it takes.

an Avengers movie would be awesome. i hope they do it

I find Hulk being on an Avengers movie as bad or worse than having a grey Hulk, Mr. Penn.

I think they should do a least one movie for every member of the avengers with Captain America's being a WWII period piece (we need to shake these superhero movies up a bit) and Have the Avengers movie in three acts: The forming of the Avengers, including the unthawing of Captain America, the tracking down of the Hulk and the third act would be a major event needing all of them working together. Essentially the first volume of the Ultimates.
