Zoe Saldana in Nina Simone biopic

Trailer...

I thought colorism played a role in people's issues with this film's production.

It's definitely typical Hollywood colorism at play - lighter-skinned black people are afforded more opportunities than our darker counterparts and I'm light-skinned myself. Once again, they hired a lighter-skinned black actress (Afro-Latina in this instance) with features that are generally deemed acceptable by our society then darkened her skin and gave her a fake nose to look more African-American than what she herself looks like.

It begs the question - why didn't they just hire a darker-skinned actress with similar features in the first place? It's not like there's a shortage of them out there wanting opportunities like this.

Someone on the front page said the chick from Chi-Raq should've gotten this role, and I agree.

I think when I dig deeper the thing that bothers me the most is them choosing Saldana for the role knowing how she looked and not just going with that. You went with an actress who looks zero percent like the person she is playing, own that and just let her play the role.

Holy crap, watched the trailer and yeah, it looks like they did make her skin look darker..

this was filmed in 2012 and 2013? holly s.. i wanted to make a joke that she was cast because Guardians made money in 2014 haha .

its funny how the make-up doesnt make her look more like Simone. just more african hahaha.

''they got the best actor for the job''. yes and they are always known actors:lmao:

Zoe Saldana isn't the best actor for any job and I like Zoe Saldana.

Yeah, I don't think anyone really had an issue with her specific racial make-up. Just that her casting was clearly colorism at play sine there's plenty of Afro-Latin/a people who are as dark as Simone was. But, in general, there's just plenty of actresses out there that looked more like Simone. It goes back to what people always say and I guess, what Viola Davis has helped bring to light, it's simply a lack opportunity for women who are darker. But, it's interesting how things are now compared to 2013 when this film was supposed to come out and how the dark skinned actresses who are getting love.

What a petty thing to get angry over. She's a black actress playing a black woman. I can't believe THAT gets people riled up now. I fear for the future.

Saldana is way too pretty to play Nina Simone.

But casting known stars in biopics where they look nothing like the subject isn't some new practice.

A lot of people, including herself, don't consider her black.

Do i agree with that? No. But dark skinned Domincans say they're not black. ANd Saldana herself has said, im pretty sure multiple times, that she's not black. So why would an actress who says she's not black take a role as a black person

Do I really care? No. I only wanna see this to watch Mike Epps as Pryor before that movie, hopefully, comes out

Agreed.

This is not even a thing to get angry about.

Saldana is way too pretty to play Nina Simone.

Johnny Depp played this guy:

It may not be an issue for you, but tell that to the dark-skinned women in Hollywood who actually look like Nina Simone without prosthetics or having their skin darkened who keep getting consistently passed up for roles like this compared to their lighter skinned counterparts of lesser talent.

Or just tell that to dark-skinned African-American women period. It just reinforces what society has already been telling them for years - they aren't attractive or appealing enough to be worthy of the same opportunities.

Probably has to do with the Dominican Republic's complicated and tenuous history with Haiti. Dark skinned Dominicans don't consider themselves black because they don't want to be associated with Haiti.

To say that someone isn't "black enough" is prejudice and insulting in its own right.

That doesn't even compare to this.

The comment was about Zoe Saldana being too pretty for the role so yes, that compares exactly to this.

Except for the fact that you are thick enough to ignore the second part of the comment which acknowledges that it's standard Hollywood procedure and always happens so . . . nice George Jung picture, I guess

Ouch...

.@zoesaldana Cool story but please take Nina's name out your mouth. For the rest of your life.

Apparently, Simone's people are complete disrespectful *******s

That's the problem right there. They're villainizing Zoe.
