Jake Gyllenhaal is reteaming with director Denis Villeneuve — having starred in the director’s Enemy and Prisoners — to bring Jo Nesbo’s crime novel The Son to the big screen.


Nine Stories and Bold Films (with which Nine Stories has a first-look and overhead deal) will produce, with Nine Stories’ Gyllenhaal and Riva Marker and Bold’s Michel Litvak producing. Bold’s Gary Michael Walters will executive produce with Nesbo and Niclas Salomonsson.

The Son follows the life of Sonny Lofthus, a once gifted 15-year-old and promising wrestler, whose downward spiral ensues when his cop father commits suicide. For the past twelve years, Sonny’s time in prison has been nurtured by an uninterrupted supply of heroin from a seedy chaplain on the inside. When Sonny learns long-hidden truths about his father’s unexpected death, he makes a brilliant escape and begins hunting down the people responsible for his wrongful sentence.

With this news I 'm presuming Denis will only produce Sicario 2 now. Can't see the studio waiting so long to get that movie going if it ever does.

Gyllenhaal worked with him on Prisoners and Enemy (both 2013) and the duo will reunite with The Son, a Nine Stories project based on the book by Jo Nesbo. Gyllenhaal says they are in the middle of the script and are “moving quickly”.
“I understand what high demand Denis is in, but I also understand my relationship with him,” he says. “We worked together before all of Hollywood was obsessed with him, so I think he is loyal in that way.”
